A Late Quartet        (R)

When the beloved cellist of a world-renowned string quartet receives a life changing diagnosis, the group's future suddenly hangs in the balance: suppressed emotions, competing egos, and uncontrollable passions threaten to derail years of friendship and collaboration.  Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken and Catherine Keener, and inspired by and structured around Beethoven's Opus 131 String Quartet in C-sharp minor, A Late Quartet pays homage to chamber music and the cultural world of New York.

Brooklyn Castle      (PG)

Brooklyn Castle tells the stories of five members of the chess team at I.S. 318, a below-the-poverty-line inner city junior high school that has won more national championships than any other in the country. The documentary follows the challenges these kids face in their personal lives as well as on the chessboard, and is as much about the sting of their losses as it is about the anticipation of their victories.

Flight              (R)

In this mystery thriller, Academy Award winner, Denzel Washington stars as Whip Whitaker, a seasoned airline pilot, who miraculously crash lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, saving nearly every soul on board.  After the crash, Whip is hailed as a hero, but as more is learned, more questions than answers arise as to who or what was really at fault and what really happened on that plane?

Watch the Around Town review coming this Friday!

The Man with the Iron Fist                       (R)

Quentin Tarantino presents The Man With the Iron Fists, an action-adventure inspired by kung-fu classics as interpreted by his longtime collaborators RZA and Eli Roth. Making his debut as a big-screen director, co-writer and leading man, RZA—alongside an exciting international cast led by Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu—tells the epic story of warriors, assassins and a lone outsider hero who all descend on one fabled village in China for a winner-takes-all battle for a fortune in gold.

The Loneliest Planet          (NR)

The summer before their wedding, Alex (Gael García Bernal) and Nica (Hani Furstenberg) are backpacking through the scenic Caucasus Mountains in Georgia.  The fit young couple, playful and affectionate, hire a local guide (Bidzina Gujabidze) to lead them on a camping trek, and the three set off into a stunning wilderness, a landscape that is both overwhelmingly open and frighteningly closed.  Suddenly, a brief but shocking pivotal incident occurs that changes everything.  Writer/director Julia Loktev's film is a haunting character study of love, betrayal and the ambiguities of forgiveness.

Watch Mark Twain Prize honoring Ellen DeGeneres | Mark Twain: Ellen DeGeneres

Watch again Friday November 9 at 10:00pm & Monday November 12 at 10:00pm!

You’re invited! Join the celebration and prepare to laugh the night away as comedian Ellen DeGeneres is honored with the 2012 Mark Twain Prize at the Kennedy Center right here in Washington, DC.  Begun in 1998, The Mark Twain Prize annually recognizes comedians who had had an impact on society in ways comparable to Mark Twain, the 19th century writer. The 90-minute special will pay tribute to her success not only as a comedian, but recognize her myriad of accomplishments as a pioneer in the television and entertainment business, as well as her humanitarian achievements. From taking a stand against bullying, to supporting residents of her hometown- New Orleans- affected by Hurricane Katrina, helping others and standing up for what is right is just as important to DeGeneres as making audiences laugh. Further, DeGeneres has paved the way for others and broke ground after both she and her character on the hit television series Ellen came out as a lesbian.

With big dreams and a lot of talent, DeGeneres began her career as an emcee (not before attempting a very varied assortment of other careers) at a local comedy club in New Orleans. She was soon discovered, and was well on her way to the top. Television shows, comedic appearances, and talk shows would follow (not to mention an array of philanthropic causes).

With her signature dance moves, genuine kindness, and hilarious antics, Ellen has grooved her way into the homes and hearts of the world. In what is sure to be a star-studded evening, fellow comedians, actors, and personalities will show their praise for the woman who has become a comedic and popular culture icon. Presenters include Kristin Chenoweth, Steve Harvey, Sean Hayes, Jimmy Kimmel, John Krasinski, John Leguizamo, Jane Lynch, Jason Mraz, Lily Tomlin and Loudon Wainwright III.

Join the celebration and watch the MARK TWAIN PRIZE: Ellen DeGeneres Tuesday, October 30 at 8:00pm on WETA TV26 and WETA HD.

Memory

If we look back far enough on our lives, either a smile or a tear may appear on our faces.  Ore hearts may skip a beat or we may release a long and drawn-out sigh.  The wonders of memory and our ability to playback eventful moments in our minds can be considered a gift or a curse. Perhaps we experienced things in our lives that we’d rather forget.  And if for a second a thought of the dark past crosses our minds, we become angry with ourselves for allowing such memories to resurface.  But maybe memory also holds the missing pieces of life’s puzzle that we so desperately try to solve.  In a world where unexplainable events take place, within this thing called life where so many of our curiosities are unanswered, memory just might be what we need for new discoveries to be revealed.  Tomorrow night, join us for thought provoking films that explore memory and its abilities to bring unsolved mysteries to light.

Remember a Brother

When selfish and conceited LA car dealer Charlie Babbitt learns of his father’s sudden death, he’s surprised to find that he is left with hardly any money from the estate.  Much to Charlie’s confusion, his father left behind a handsome sum of money to a mental institution.  Charlie is soon shocked to realize that he has an older brother named Raymond who resides there as an autistic patient.  Although being completely unaware that he even had a brother, Charlie wastes no time to use Raymond as a pawn to try and claim a piece of his father’s estate.  But spending time with his long lost brother allows Charlie to see a different side of him under his autistic symptoms.  Vague moments of their early history together become clear when Charlie recalls false childhood memories of having an imaginary friend named “Rain Man.”  He finally realizes that a Rain Man really did exist.  It was his brother, Raymond whose name he had difficulty pronouncing as a child.  Will Charlie squander his brother’s inheritance or overcome his jealousy and greed?  Saturday night at 9:30 on WETA HD and WETA TV26 tune in for the Oscar-winning drama, Rain Man starring Hollywood favorites, Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman.

Remember Suffering

One of the most captivating locations on Earth rests within the Chilean Atacama Desert.  Although the desert hills and cliffs rising 10,000 feet above sea level stand isolated from the valleys below, in the skies above hover some of the most breathtaking cosmos that scientists and natives alike have ever seen.  The desert stands away from civilization where city lights and activity would distort the bright and colorful activity of the night sky.  Scientists from all over the world come to the Atacama Desert for a rare and incomparable look at the stars and galaxies that seem just a grasp away.  It is truly a beautiful place full of wonder and mystery.  For Chilean locals however, the Atacama Desert holds a dark past.  The red sands of the desert remain as a harsh resting ground for hundreds of political prisoners who were mercilessly murdered and burned during the Pinochet dictatorship.  Family members of the “disappeared” souls search for their remains almost daily, but the terrain can be so unforgiving that many are left only to wonder.  Saturday at 11:30pm, WETA HD and WETA TV26 present the POV: Nostalgia for the LightHow could a land with a beautiful massive sky above experience so much pain and death below?  Join us for a film that displays an entire community’s search for answers, some scientific, and others emotional.

Enjoy this POV interview with filmmaker Patricio Guzman.

With Call the Midwife, step into East London during the 1950s as novice nurse Jenny Lee travels through her new life as a midwife alongside an Order of Nuns, the Sisters of St. Raymond Nonnatus. Joining Yes, Minister and Fawlty Towers on Sunday evenings is Blackadder. Many great dynasties, strong and brave, have played a part in shaping Britain's heritage. The Blackadders are not one of them. From cowards to cads and back again, the Blackadders have managed to seriously lower the integrity of every era through which they have wended their serpentine way. This comedy is broken into four series, each set in a different era with actor Rowan Atkinson portraying a different Blackadder family member in each series. We begin with series 1, The Black Adder: the first recorded Blackadder, cursed from youth by a deformed haircut, creeps around medieval England in a pair of unattractive tights. His career starts with the murder of his own charming Uncle Richard III, and heads downwards from there, never helped by his companions, pea-brained Percy and pea-sized Baldrick. Join us at 9:00pm for the premiere of Blackadder November 11, 2012 and catch more episodes Sundays at 9:00pm. Want more details on series 1? Laugh along with the exploits of Mr. Bean, a child in a grown man's body, as he blunders through everyday tasks wreaking havoc as he goes. Influenced by physical performers such as comic actors from silent films, Mr. Bean, played by Rowan Atkinson, rarely speaks and largely uses physical humor. WETA Fall Movie Festival | October 13, 2012

Wrap up the week with two great films as the WETA Fall Movie Festival continues on WETA TV26 and WETA HD!  Saturday nights join us for the WETA Movie, followed by documentaries from Independent Lens or POV.  So, grab a friend, and have some snacks at the ready for another Saturday night of brilliant storytelling through film!

Hero

This Saturday’s films don’t possess any of our favorite superheroes such as Superman or Captain America.  But they do tell the stories of everyday people, fiction and non-fiction, who strive to fight for what they believe in and protect what is their own.  If we look back through our nation’s history we may recall the struggles that people experienced with poverty, civil rights, dangerous working conditions, wars, etc.  Their perseverance is a tale of heroism in itself.  Their triumphs in the midst of difficult times have brought forth a better future.  A hero can even be a family member who looks out for the well-being of others.  Heroes are everywhere. No supernatural powers are necessary.  What counts is that one has good intentions.  So tonight we present films that display heroes as they are. Strong in the soul, fast at lending a helping hand, and brave enough to stand up for what’s right.

To the Rescue

Ethan Edwards has just returned to his home in Texas after serving as a Confederate soldier in the American Civil War for three years.  Just days after his homecoming things go horribly wrong when he finds his brother and sister-in-law murdered.  His two nieces, Lucy and Debbie are also missing.  Some clues leave Edwards to believe that the Comanche Indians are behind the murders and abduction.  Wasting no time he forms a search party with his close friends and they begin a perilous journey to find the girls.  Battling rough terrain and Comanche, the men get seemingly closer to where the girls are being held captive.  But they experience several setbacks along the way. Lucy’s dead body is discovered near a Comanche camp and several of Edward’s comrades lose their lives during the search.  Edwards will stop at nothing to bring Debbie back to safety.  But first he must gather every last ounce of strength and determination to break the influence that the Comanche tribe has on her.  Saturday night at 9:30 join us for an adventure as we present the western, The Searchers on WETA TV26 and WETA HD.  Saddle up and meet an everyday man turned hero as he fights for his family.

Heroes of Butte

A new discovery of copper in the mines of Butte, Montana transformed the area from a small frontier town to a region booming with opportunity.  Electricity had become a new phenomenon during the turn of the 20th century resulting in copper being a much needed and valuable resource.  Miners from all over the world flocked to Butte seeking work in the mining business, a profession no doubt extremely dangerous and challenging to one’s health.  With every week came the news of several miners having lost their lives while on the job leaving women and children behind to fend for themselves.  Questions were raised about the lack of safety and concern for laborers.  Miners were well aware of the risks of going to work each day having witnessed several fatal accidents and regretfully bidding friends farewell.  In light of several tragedies however, miners broke ethnic barriers to join together and support one another during the struggles for decent working conditions.  You may ask why they put their lives at risk everyday for the advancement of electricity, a cause much bigger than themselves.  You may wonder how they stood against the systems demanding safer conditions in the wake of horrific deaths of fellow miners.  Possibly, to help raise their families from the ground up and also give each other the support and sense of camaraderie that they deserved.  Anyone can easily give in to tragedy and struggle.  But a hero takes the difficult situations in stride and strives to overcome them.  Saturday at 11:30pm tune in to WETA TV26 and WETA HD for the presentation of Independent Lens’ Butte, America.  Don’t miss this display of determination and bravery as this film tells the story of how the town of Butte, Montana brought in miners and molded them into heroes.

Watch this behind the scenes video about the making of the movie and read more from Producer/Director Pamela Roberts.

Somewhere Between (NR)

As a result of the Chinese government's one-child policy instituted in 1979, hundreds of thousands of babies were abandoned, mostly girls.  “Somewhere Between” tells the intimate stories of four Chinese girls who are born to families who are unable to keep them. Instead of being raised by their biological parents the baby girls are given to orphanages and eventually adopted by American families. The film lets four girls tell their own stories, from their point of view. We gain access to their deepest thoughts—about their families, their feelings of being an "other," and their powerful connections to a past that most of them cannot recall. Directed by Linda Goldstein Knowlton.

Watch the trailer here!

Wuthering Heights (NR)

A fresh and distinct take on the classic novel by Emily Brontë. An epic love story that spans childhood well into the young adult years, the film follows Heathcliff, a boy taken in by a benevolent Yorkshire farmer, Earnshaw. Living in Earnshaw's home, Heathcliff develops a passionate relationship with the farmer's teenage daughter, Catherine, inspiring the envy and mistrust of his son, Hindley. When Earnshaw passes away, the now-grown characters must finally confront the intense feelings and rivalries that have built up throughout their years together.

Argo   (R)

Based on real events, the dramatic thriller “Argo” chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis—the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades. Academy Award® winner Ben Affleck (“The Town,” “Good Will Hunting”) directs and stars in the film, which is produced by Oscar® nominee Grant Heslov (“Good Night, and Good Luck.”), Affleck, and Oscar® winner George Clooney (“Syriana”).

Middle of Nowhere (R)

From the Sundance Film Festival to the big screen, Ava DuVernay’s film “Middle of Nowhere” brings forth a unique story about one woman’s journey of self-realization.  When the promising medical student’s husband is incarcerated for several years, she must put her dreams on hold and learn to cope with his absence as life brings some unexpected surprises her way.

Watch the WETA Around Town panel review, to be posted on Friday.

This Weekend on WETA: Art and Drama

See his work, see into his soul

Visit The National Gallery of Art in your home this Friday night and prepare to be captivated by the many works of twentieth century painter, George Bellows. A brilliant fusion of art and narration tells (but better yet, shows) the many strokes of the life of this artist in the half-hour program, National Gallery of Art: George Bellows.

Born and raised in Ohio, Bellows left for New York at a time when the city was well on its way to becoming a bustling metropolis. The new scenery served as the inspiration for much of his paintings, in which he depicted the changing city, plight of the poor, and excitement and chaos of the city. Unlike fellow artists of his time, Bellows was interested in painting reality and truth-that which was right before his eyes, even when the truth was not a “pretty sight”. Through just a sampling of Bellows’ Portfolio, National Gallery of Art: George Bellows brings you the story of New York’s transformation, Bellows’ life and artistic evolution, and a reflection of Bellows’ understanding of life in an ever-expanding metropolis.

His paintings will bring you on a voyage to the places and people Bellows was most struck by: from illegal boxing matches to the mysterious sea of Mohegan. See the world through Bellow’s eyes and no doubt you will see into his soul. Watch National Gallery of Art: George Bellows tonight, October 5 at 10:00pm on WETA TV26 and WETA HD.

Our WETA Around Town critics reviewed the George Bellows exhibit at NGA which is on display through October 8. See what they had to say!

WETA Fall Movie Festival | October 6, 2012

Bring another WETA Fall Movie Festival to your living room as we present a great line-up of films and documentaries this Saturday.  We select some of the best stories ever told through film in hopes to inspire you and encourage you to think and dream big for a better tomorrow.  It’s also a great way to shake off yet another busy week. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy another Saturday night of great story-telling!

For the Love

Love. It’s possibly one of the most powerful energies on earth.  And it doesn’t necessarily always refer to romance.  Love is versatile.  It can be a love for something you do, something you have.  A love for a friend or family member, and yes, even a love for someone special.  That feeling of unconditional compassion and care is capable of satisfying the spirit or even correcting a wrong.  Whether it’s a love that holds a family together, a love that avenges another or a love for something that makes a person whole, it’s so real and unlike any other force.  Tonight’s films display love in many different forms.  Experience love in action as everyday people in these stories strive for what makes them happy and what they believe to be right.

Forbidden Love

A true test of love lies in this story of The Zacharys, who try to carry on with their Texas ranch despite the tragic death of their father who had been murdered by Kiowa Indians.  The eldest son, Ben is left as the head of the family to help his mother rear his two younger brothers and adopted sister, Rachel.  He is especially protective of Rachel having fallen in love with her for reasons he can’t explain.  Although they aren’t related, he is aware it is a boundary that must not be crossed.  Tension within the town begins to rise when rumors surface about Rachel being an Indian.  With other ranchers shunning the family and Kiowa Indians demanding Rachel’s return to their tribe, Ben finds that he must follow his heart and stand up for Rachel knowing it could risk the safety of his family.  It is a fight to the finish as the Kiowa tribe and Zachary boys try to claim Rachel. But when the dust finally settles she has the final say.  Saturday night at 9:30 tune into WETA HD and WETA TV26 as we present The Unforgiven and witness a love that overpowers differences and challenges the norm.

Justice For Love

The Philippines is divided over the rape and murder of the Chiong sisters who disappeared during a tropical storm in 1997.  Paco Larrañaga is arrested and promptly sentenced to death for the heinous crime.  Despite evidence that suggests his innocence, he remains on death row with no helpful developments.  The mothers of both parties campaign and defend for their children.  Larrañaga’s family urges authorities to find the right individual responsible before it’s too late.  The mother of the sisters cries out for their justice.  Time is running out for Larrañaga as he desperately waits for a possible change in the case.  But the battle between the two mothers and the love for their children rages on.  Saturday at 11:30pm on WETA HD and WETA TV26 POV Give Up Tomorrow goes to the core of the nation torn by this case and analyzes the passion that both mothers have for their own.  They will stop at nothing until justice is served.  But someone must answer for the murders. Who will it be?

Watch this interview with Filmmakers Michael Collins and Marty Syjuco

Love of Art

After POV Give Up Tomorrow at 1:00am tune in to WETA HD and WETA TV26 and meet a couple who’s passion and love for art has made them a phenomenon within the art world.  Once former art students, Herb and Dorothy Vogel realized the pure satisfaction of simply collecting art pieces from around the world.  They were frequent visitors of several art shows in New York City where they would befriend many artists and discover art pieces to adorn their one-bedroom apartment with.  Over time their collections began to take up an overwhelming amount of space.  After weeks of packing and cleaning the couple had their million dollars worth of art shipped off to the National Gallery of Art.  But sometimes old habits never die.  The couple continues to collect for the love of art and remain prominent figures within that world.  Independent Lens introduces Herb and Dorothy.

Here’s what you have to look forward to:

The First Presidential Debate 2012

Kick off campaign season by tuning in tonight at 9:00 to watch the First Presidential Debate. Moderated by PBS’ own Jim Lehrer (who has served as moderator in eleven nationally televised presidential debates thus far), questions posed to President Obama and Governor Romney will center on domestic policy.  The debate will be divided into six segments of fifteen minutes each, with the first half focusing on the economy, and the second half on health care, the role of government, and governing.

Don’t miss out on the Presidential Debate that will surely set the tone for the remainder of the election. Watch the First Presidential Debate tonight at 9:00 on WETA TV26 and WETA HD.

The Virginia Senatorial Debate 2012

Watch important coverage of the Virginia Senatorial candidates debating the issues that matter to Virginians. Senatorial candidates Tim Kane (Democrat) and George Allen (Republican) will face off in the second of three debates between the two former Virginia governors. Issues on the agenda? Social issues, foreign policy, the economy….and everything from gay marriage to America’s role in Afghanistan.

Don’t miss out on this debate, as the Virginia race is one of only a few in the country that will decide if Republicans or Democrats will hold the power in the United States Senate come January. Watch Tuesday, October 9 at 5:00pm on WETA TV26 or WETA HD.

Frontline: The Choice 2012

A former community organizer. A businessman in the private sector. You’ve heard their plans for America and know their views on the issues. You’ve seen their birth certificates and read their tax returns. President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney have told America their stories…but with all the buzz, what information do you really need for this election? Go beyond the headlines, tabloids, political advertisements, and Super PACs, and let the Frontline political team give you a detailed outline of each candidate in the two-hour documentary, Frontline: The Choice 2012.

Through over one-hundred interviews with the candidates’ friends, family, and political associates, Frontline: The Choice 2012 explores how President Barack Obama became America’s first African American President, and why Mitt Romney transformed from businessman to rising politician. Though their political outlooks differ as much as their histories, health-care reform remains a focal issue for both and Frontline is here to help sort out the facts.

Watch Frontline: The Choice 2012 Tuesday, October 9 at 9:00pm on WETA TV26 and WETA HD.  Also catch this special episode of Frontline October 26 at 9:00pm and November 5 at 10:00pm.

Vice Presidential Debate 2012

The Vice Presidential candidates may have more in common than you’d think. Vice President Biden and Congressman Ryan are both Roman Catholics, and have working-class backgrounds. They are each family men; when Biden’s children were young he commuted two hours by train each day to Washington and back, and Ryan budgets valuable campaigning time for camping trips and hunting lessons with his three children. And when the Green Bay Packers are playing, Biden and his opponent Ryan are rooting along. Nonetheless, the pair are football fields apart on some major issues under consideration for this national election. And when it comes to choosing your Vice President, knowing their stances on those issues is of the utmost importance and WETA is providing you with access to the Vice Presidential Debate.

In the second of the four general election debates, watch Vice Presidential candidates Biden and Ryan in the 2012 Vice Presidential Debate. Focusing on foreign and domestic policy, the debate will be divided into nine ten-minute segments. Moderated by Martha Raddatz, senior foreign affairs correspondent for ABC News, Americans can expect to see the candidates battle for their significant Presidential candidate’s votes.

Don’t miss out on the highest profile event for the Vice Presidential candidates before the election. Brought to you by PBS NewsHour, watch the Vice Presidential Debate Thursday, October 11 at 9:00pm on WETA TV26 and WETA HD.

Race 2012

WETA brings you an insightful and thought provoking PBS Election 2012 special: Race 2012. In the hopeful race to the White House, how much stock do the candidates put into race? Race 2012 examines the racial landscape of America and explores the effects of race on the election and politics in a country which is as ethnically diverse and varying from coast to coast as are the streets of New York City and the hills of Kansas.

Focusing on the current presidential election at hand, judge for yourself the importance of winning one ethnicity’s vote over another. Can candidates really appeal to an entire race and guarantee their support? Does one race have more “value” than another? Among other issues, Race 2012 investigates how immigrants have reconstructed the American electoral landscape and the declining influence of white voters in an ever-increasingly ethnic America.

Watch Race 2012 Tuesday, October 12 at 8:00pm on WETA TV26 and WETA HD.

Second and Third Presidential Debates 2012

Election Day may be just a few weeks away, but there’s still a lot more to hear from the candidates!  Watch the final two parts of the Presidential Debates:

Tuesday, October 16 at 9:00pm: President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney will debate foreign and domestic policy in a town meeting format (citizens to pose questions) moderated by CNN Chief Political Correspondent, Candy Crowley.

Monday, October 22, 2012 at 9:00pm: President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney will wrap up the debates with one final round focusing on foreign policy. Bob Schieffer, host of Face the Nation on CBS, will moderate.

Photography -- Cultures on the Edge

Join Chris Rainier as he discusses his latest book on endangered cultures at the National Geographic Museum. A former assistant to Ansel Adams, Rainier’s own work has been showcased in publications like Time and Life magazine. His book, Cultures on the Edge, focuses on the struggle to maintain the traditions and beliefs of ancient cultures threatened by the spread of modern practices in countries like Papau New Guinea. Butter                      (R)

A tale of competition at its most cut-throat, BUTTER surveys the raw ambition of Laura Pickler (Jennifer Garner), the wife of Bob Pickler (Ty Burrell), Iowa’s long-reigning champion butter carver.

Taken 2                  (PG-13)

Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent with a “particular set of skills” who stopped at nothing to save his daughter Kim from kidnappers.

The Oranges         (R)

David and Paige Walling (Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener) and Terry and Cathy Ostroff (Oliver Platt, Allison Janney) are best friends and neighbors living on Orange Drive in suburban New Jersey.  Their comfortable existence goes awry when prodigal daughter Nina Ostroff (Leighton Meester), newly broken up with her fiancé Ethan (Sam Rosen), returns home for Thanksgiving after a five-year absence.  Rather than developing an interest in the successful son of her neighbors, Toby Walling (Adam Brody), which would please both families, it’s her parents' best friend David who captures Nina’s attention.

The Paperboy        (R)

A sexually and racially charged film noir from Oscar®-nominated director Lee Daniels (Precious), The Paperboy takes audiences deep into the backwaters of steamy 1960s South Florida, as investigative reporter Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey) and his partner Yardley Acheman (David Oyelowo) chase a sensational, career-making story. With the help of Ward's younger brother Jack (Zac Efron) and sultry death-row groupie Charlotte Bless (Nicole Kidman), the pair tries to prove violent swamp-dweller Hillary Van Wetter (John Cusack) was framed for the murder of a corrupt local sheriff.  Based on the provocative bestselling novel by Pete Dexter (Mulholland Falls, Rush), THE PAPERBOY peels back a sleepy small town's decades-old façade of Southern gentility to reveal a quagmire of evil as dark as a Florida bayou.
