This Week on WETA UK: September 30 - October 6

WETA UK brings you the best of British programming from dramas and comedies to new favorites and contemporary series. Featuring classics from BBC and series created by a wide range of major UK producers, WETA UK is the place to go for British television in the Washington, DC area.

Here is what WETA UK has in store for viewers this week!

Monday at 9:00pm hop across the pond to the fictional English county of Midsomer and join Barnaby and Troy in another installment of Midsomer Murders. The partners find themselves caught in the middle of two feuding villages during the investigation of a film star’s death in the episode “Tale of Two Hamlets.”

Tuesday at 8:00pm be the first to see the WETA UK premiere of the new series Father Brown! In the premiere episode of this period drama inspired by the stories of GK Chesterton, join the crime-solving Catholic priest as he attempts to resolve the murder of a local village man who is found dead near the church tower. The case takes an interesting turn when the dead man’s wife confesses to the murder in the premiere episode, “The Hammer of God.”

Wednesday at 8:00pm it’s Mystery Night on WETA UK! Don’t miss “Sins of the Father Part 2,” the conclusion of the thrilling two part episode of Inspector Morse! Join the cranky police investigator as he attempts to solve a case that would drive a man to drink; the murder of a brewery director. At 9:00pm catch three hours of Masterpiece Mystery! First on Inspector Lewis, a psychic is murdered and Lewis and Hathaway must test their mental limits when a trail of clues leads them through the Oxford psychology department in “Down among the Fearful.” At 10:30pm inspect the stunning conclusion of Season 2 of Sherlock! Sherlock’s credibility has been called into question in the media after his inability to solve three ingenious thefts. Can the legendary detective solve these clever crimes and repair his tattered reputation? Find out in the season 2 finale, “The Reichenbach Fall.”

Thursday at 9:00pm tune in for the season 2 premiere of Vera! Join the Detective Chief Inspector as she investigates the firebombing of a former superior’s house that leaves him physically burned and emotionally scarred when it lands his daughter in the hospital in “Ghost Position.”

Friday at 9:30pm explore the simultaneous growth of a young Queen Victoria alongside the birth of the modern world in the riveting documentary Queen Victoria’s Empire. Embark on an educational and emotional journey into the past of a vital figure in Britain’s history, while reflecting on a critical moment of societal growth in the country with the first parts of the series, “Engines of Change” and “Passage to India.”

Saturday at 6:30pm join everyone’s favorite socially incompetent doctor in back to back episodes of Doc Martin! In “City Slickers” Martin and Louisa are working on their budding relationship but its growth is stunted by Louisa’s peculiar new neighbors. In “The Admirer” an elegant hotel owner has her eye on Martin and Louisa is forced to compete for the doctor’s affections.

Sunday at 7:00am spend a full hour with the working class people of Albert Square as they wrestle with the everyday aspects of professional and domestic life in back to back episodes of Eastenders.

Free Movies in DC | WETA Movies September 28

Get ready for a movie double header on Saturday September 28 on WETA TV26 and WETA HD! First, prepare for an awkward encounter with the in-laws in the WETA Movie The Bird Cage at 9:30pm, followed by an in-depth look at a significant American historical event in Independent Lens: The Longoria Affair at 11:30pm!

The Bird Cage (1996)
In this witty 90s comedy, Robin Williams and Nathan Lane star as a Miami resort owner and his drag queen partner. When their son gets engaged, they commit to playing the roles of straight man and wife to help their son gain the approval of his fiancée’s conservative parents. Independent Lens: The Longoria Affair
The Longoria Affair examines the story of Private Felix Longoria, a Mexican-American World War II solider who died during the war. When his home town funeral parlor in Three Rivers, Texas refused Longoria a burial service because of his Hispanic heritage, his family refused to let injustice go unnoticed. The events that ensued helped launch the Mexican-American civil rights movement in the United States. Take a deeper look into an intriguing part of America’s history in this compelling documentary. WETA Around Town Events: September 27-29

Art, movies, music, dance, and lots of culture infuse this autumn weekend in the DC area! Read on for more ideas of great things to do Around Town September 27-29!

Cyber in Securities
This weekend is your last chance to experience the acclaimed exhibit Cyber in Securities at Pepco Edison Place Gallery! Washington Project for the Arts presents Cyber in Securities, an exhibition featuring 12 artists and art teams from across the US, Canada, and Europe whose work explores the issues of tracking and being tracked in a digital age. Through works that simultaneously present themselves physically and as online data, this passionate group of individuals address concerns that new media may be used against them. Both aesthetically pleasing and socially conscious, the interactive exhibit offers downloadable apps as well as interaction with tablets and systems that the artists programmed and built! Cyber in Securities is part of WPA’s Experimental Media 2013, the eighth installment of WPA’s Experimental Media program.

Films in the Park
This weekend Films in the Park presents a free screening of Despicable Me, the animated comedy starring the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, and Russell Brand. Come down to the Mosaic District in Merrifield and enjoy the weather and the films in the beautifully landscaped Strawberry Field, across the street from Target and in front of the Angelika Film Center. Bring the kids, grab at bite to eat at one the many great eateries around the Mosaic and enjoy the outdoor experience of cinema viewing in a whole new way.

Latin Sizzle Festival
Presented by Dance Place, the Latin Sizzle Festival not only sizzles but pops! It’s a cultural celebration with just the right combination of spirited dance and electrifying music. It's the sounds and movement from the heart of Bahia, Brazil accentuating its vibrant culture and beauty. DC Casineros is one of the many acts present this Saturday. The festival comes to a close Sunday at 4pm so enjoy all you can before it all ends!

Monday at 10:30pm tune in for our new show The Ambassador A father blames his son's death on emissions coming from a British nuclear facility and takes over the embassy in the episode "Cluster of Betrayals".

Tuesday at 7:30pm marks the start of season 3 of My Family! Janey goes to college and dad Ben is thrilled although Susan doesn’t seem to be so happy to see her go.

Wednesday at 8:00pm solve a mystery with Inspector Morse in "Sins of the Father". The managing director of the old-fashioned Radford Brewery is murdered and Morse learns the family-run business was resisting a takeover attempt. Morse is soon convinced that anyone involved may be hiding something but will this help him solve the case or make it impossible to debunk?

Thursday at 10:30pm is classic Sherlock Holmes with "The Sign of Four". Every year since her father’s disappearance, Miss Mary Morstan receives a valuable pearl in the mail from an unknown person. She soon contacts Sherlock Holmes for help regarding her father, captain Morstan, who had disappeared some 10 years ago.

Friday at 9:30pm discover the Secrets of Highclere Castle. Downton Abbey introduced us to Highclere Castle for being the location backdrop of the popular drama; now learn what secrets the castle holds in the true story of one of the world’s most famous homes.

Saturday at 9:00pm tune in for the WETA UK premiere of WETA UK Event: The Complete Mr. Selfridge! The eight-part series is based on the life of American Harry Gordon Selfridge who builds his visionary department store in London. Shopping has never been so dramatic!

Sunday at 8:00pm join us for a night of comedy. Start with a full hour of French Fields followed by more episodes of all your favorites. Lead Balloon has Rick going from strength to strength in his new job as a presenter on the Bargain Channel. In Worst Week of my Life it’s only days until Howard and Mel's big day but disaster strikes when the best man almost drowns and Howard gets arrested. Ben fakes an illness to avoid school and Angela reveals that her relationship with Trent is over in Outnumbered. Jeff sees a beautiful woman alone in a pub as the attraction is mutual between them, however they struggle with a language barrier in this week's episode Coupling.

In the 1980s, Central American dictator Efrain Rios Montt waged a brutal genocide against the Mayan population of Guatemala.
