NEW Downton Abbey | Season 3 Marathon & Season 4 Premiere

Beginning at 10:30am on Sunday January 5, 2014, tune into WETA TV26 & HD for a Masterpeice Classic: Downton Abbey special episode and season 3 marathon leading into the premiere of season 4, the newest season.

At 10:30am, watch Return to Downton Abbey and feed your appetite for more Crowley family drama. Join host and devoted fan of the series, Susan Sarandon, as she recalls the fond memories from the past three seasons and presents a sneak peek at season 4. The special features a mix of behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with creators and cast members, and video clips of memorable moments. Prepare for all of the drama, rivalry, jealousy, and romance of season 4 with Return to Downton Abbey!

At 10:58am, watch our Downton Abbey season 3 marathon. Every episode of the last season, back-to-back leading into the premiere of season 4. There will be a half-hour break at 6:30pm for PBS Newshour Weekend and Downton Abbey season 3 episode 7 will begin right after at 7pm with the season 4 episode 1 premiere at 9pm.

Then, finally, at 9pm, watch the Downton Abbey season 4 premiere! As the family struggles to lift their financial and emotional woes, season 4 is sure to bring the drama, suspense, and excitement Downton Abbey is so great at achieving. Downton Abbey will air on WETA TV26 & HD Sundays at 9pm and Fridays at 8:30pm beginning January 5, 2014. This Week on WETA UK: December 30-January 5

This week is a huge one. The new year, 2014, begins and WETA UK unveils lots of new programming. We’re excited to begin new comedies and documentaries this week. Read on to see what’s coming this week, December 30-January 5!

Monday at 10:30pm tune in for the WETA UK premiere of the action comedy Spy. Tim quits his post at his mundane job at a computer store and unexpectedly stumbles into a career with MI5. Then at 11pm, watch British comedy Lead Balloon from the very first episode. Cynical comedian Rick Spleen (Jack Dee) tries to avoid an ugly baby's christening and stars in a public-service announcement about recycling that backfires.

Tuesday at 9pm catch two back-to-back episodes of Doc Martin. The second episode, beginning at 9:46pm, is the first episode in season 2. Martin and Louisa share a disastrous first kiss, Martin gets a new receptionist, and a local fisherman suffers from a list of ailments.

Wednesday at 11:30pm watch the WETA UK premiere of comedy Me & Mrs. Jones. The series follows the increasingly complex life of Mrs. Gemma Jones (Sarah Alexander) as she balances love, affection and motherhood between an ex-husband, one grown-up son, two young daughters and male admirers with a 20-year age gap. In the premiere episode, Gemma's life changes when her son returns from travelling and a friendly parent named Tom asks her out on a date.

Thursday at 9pm get your dose of mystery with back-to-back episodes of Masterpiece Mystery! Miss Marple. The first episode, The Secret of Chimneys, is about a weekend party hosted by Lord Caterham (Edward Fox) and attended by Marple (Julia McKenzie). One of the guests, Austrian count Ludwig Von Stainach (Anthony Higgins), goes missing. In the second episode, beginning at 10:30pm, The Blue Geranium is about the murder of wealthy Mary Pritchard (Sharon Small) in the village of Little Ambrose, where Marple's visiting old friend Rev. Milewater (David Calder), shortly after the unexplained death of a young man.

Friday from 1pm-7:30pm watch the best British action, mystery, adventures in the DC area! 1pm: MI-5, 2pm: New Tricks, 3pm: Waking the Dead, 4pm: Hustle, 5pm: DCI Banks, 6:30pm: Scott & Bailey.

Saturday from 8pm-10pm tune in for the WETA UK premiere of Queen Victoria’s Children, a documentary investigating the claim that Queen Victoria's relationships with her children were complex and tumultuous. Behind closed doors, royal domestic life often seemed like a battlefield and this series uses a wealth of written material and photos left by Victoria, Albert and their children, including letters, diaries, memoirs and journals, to bring the subject and characters to life.

Sunday at 8pm join us for the WETA UK premiere of Tales From the Palaces. Discover mysterious marks from the time of the Salem witch trials, hidden in the roof of Kew Palace, and the tangible remains of 'the madness of King George'. And, admire the extraordinary efforts to recreate a complete Tudor feast and the painstaking, delicate repairs of Princess Diana's dresses. Then at 9pm, open your eyes to the bizarre, ferocious and surprisingly beautiful world of the invertebrates with Life in the Undergrowth! Join David Attenborough on his groundbreaking exploration into a spectacular miniature universe never normally seen, but teeming all around us. If you haven’t had enough documentaries yet, stay on WETA UK for The Dark Charisma of Adolf Hitler: Leading Millions into the Abyss part 1 at 10pm. This three part documentary examines Hitler’s relationship with the people he led during the Second World War, with the help of testimony from people who were there, compelling archive film and dramatic reconstructions.

WETA Arts Returns | Arts in DC

WETA Arts returns Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 1:30pm on WETA TV26 & HD!

WETA Arts is back! The thirty-minute WETA production anchored in local Washington DC art and artists returns with a new format on January 12, 2014. Hosted by WETA Around Town’s Robert Aubry Davis, the new WETA Arts will feature a mix of local and national material. In addition to WETA produced segments highlighting local DC art and artists, the show will also feature pieces from other public TV stations around the country. In the inaugural episode, WETA meets up with local artist Mia Feuer to discuss her stunning new exhibition at The Corcoran Gallery, An Unkindness. Inspired by sights witnessed during the artist’s international travel, Feuer’s structures examine the interaction between the synthetic and natural worlds. Then, WETA Around Town panelists Janis Goodman and Peter Winant join host Robert Aubry Davis for an extended discussion on the Hirshhorn Museum’s new exhibit, Damage Control: Art and Destruction Since 1950. This breathtaking new exhibit features 90 works in a wide collection of media by 40 artists from around the world. The panelists discuss the way this exhibit explores destruction as a vital part of artistic expression and the creative process. The WETA Arts premiere episode will also feature two national pieces created by fellow public television stations exploring artistic displays around the United States. In the Christmas special, Worst Christmas of My Life, Howard decides to scuffle with Santa and he and Mel leave a mess at her parents’ home. Outnumbered is a witty British comedy about a couple, the Brockman’s, and their three kids.

When Nick Rumpole visits from school, Horace realizes his own son has acquired some of the Timson family traits.

My Family Christmas Special: Have an Unhappy Christmas at 3:00 pm

Ben gets Susan a vacuum cleaner for Christmas, but when he finds out his gift is unromantic, he buys a necklace instead. Ben is annoyed when he later finds out he could have got the necklace for half price if he had waited a day. Meanwhile, the family decides to get a picture of Ben and Susan on their wedding day put on mugs and other household items as a romantic souvenir, but when there is a mix-up at the factory, a picture of them on their honeymoon night is displayed on the souvenirs instead.

Agatha Christie’s Poirot: The Dream at 10:30 pm
Belgian detective Hercule Poirot tackles a variety of mysteries in this intelligent investigative series. In The Dream, the sleuth investigates the apparent murder of a pie-compay owner who feared someone was manipulating his mind. When the investigation spirals out of control, Poirot finds himself enveloped in a world of false identities and affairs.

Masterpiece Mystery! Miss Marple: The Mirror Crack’d From Side to Side at 9:00 pm

The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side is based on the novel by Agatha Christie and centers on Marina Gregg, a glamorous but fragile Hollywood star. When the entire village falls in love with Gregg, she invites everyone over to her elaborate home for a party. The night goes awry when a guest drops dead after drinking a poisoned daiquiri, leading to a shocking mystery deserving of a Hollywood ending.

Rosemary and Thyme: Sweet Angelica at 8:00 pm

While trying to restore the lawns at an exclusive boarding school that caters to the children of wealthy foreigners, Rosemary and Laura become involved in a hostile murder mystery involving an attractive Polish student named Angelica. When one of Angelica’s male suitors turns up dead, the young girl is among the prime suspects. Rosemary and Laura must attempt to solve the mystery of the dead boy while also dealing with the orderly dead patches of grass on the school lawn.

Hetty Wainthropp Investigates: Serving the Community at 9:00 pm
Join Hetty Wainthropp, a detective in her 60s, as she attempts to fight crime armed with only her pocketbook and remarkable wisdom. In Serving the Community, Hetty investigates a string of muggings of Indian-restaurant owners. When a frustrated Hetty is ready to inform the police of the situation, a mysterious group attacks her and steals her purse. After this horrific robbery, the case becomes personal for Hetty and she decides to solve the mystery herself.

This warm and funny comedy series focuses on three generations of a family who host customers from all walks of life at their seafront café. When England denies World War I veteran Christopher Foyle the opportunity to contribute to the country’s military efforts once again, he shifts his focus to the capturing of local criminals on the south coast of England. In Plan of Attack, it is April 1944, the Allies have stepped up their war effort, and it seems the end of the war is in sight. Foyle has resigned as Detective Chief Superintendent, but comes out of retirement after a tragic event. Midsomer Murders | Three Episodes Sunday December 22

Midsomer Murders follows British police inspector, John Barnaby, who investigates mysteries and murders in a rural English county. Catch three consecutive mysteries of this intriguing investigative series beginning at 7:30pm on Sunday, December 22. Watch Barnaby and his partner Scott attempt to solve the mysterious death of an author in Sins of Commission, examine the strange murders of local church officials in The Straw Woman, and work to save a family during the holiday season in Ghosts of Christmas Past.

In Sins of Commission, trouble arises during Midsomer’s twelfth annual Literary Festival. When police find a local author dead at his home, they suspect foul play. The bodies continue to pile up, leading Barnaby and Scott on a hunt involving secret love affairs, embezzlement, and corruption.

The Straw Woman at 9pm
Midsomer heats up when police find the assistant priest of the local church burned alive in a reconstruction of the straw woman. When the high priest suffers a similar death, the police struggle to keep the villagers from taking justice into their own hands. As the death toll mounts, Barnaby will need a miracle to solve these mysterious crimes.

Ghosts of Christmas Past at 10:30pm
Exactly nine years after Ferdy Villers passed away; his entire family reunites for Christmas, unaware that they may be in danger. Meanwhile, Barnaby is hosting his in-laws for the holidays when investigators call him in to work a mysterious case. When an accident involving the Villers family turns out to be murder, Barnaby and Scott must first unravel the past in order to resolve the present.

Christmas at Belmont 2013

Christmas in Norway with the St. Olaf Choir
For over one hundred years, music lovers in Norway have celebrated the holiday season with one of the country’s most honored traditions, the St. Olaf College Christmas Festival. Initially a small musical program designed for a remote college community, the renowned annual commemoration now enjoys a worldwide audience. This year, the St. Olaf College Choir and the Norwegian girl choir, Nidaros Jentekor perform a full assortment of Christmas compositions, familiar carols and hymns from around the world from Trondheim’s historic Nidaros Cathedral. Become a part of a long-running annual tradition as you join the St. Olaf Choir in belting out your favorite holiday tunes. Silent Night
The Minnesota Opera company's world premiere production of Silent Night recounts an extraordinary moment of peace during one of the bloodiest wars in human history. The fascinating true story, which won composer Kevin Puts the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for music, is based on the French film "Joyeaux Noel," which itself is based on the true story of a 1914 Christmas Eve truce during WWI, when Scottish, French and German officers defied orders and observed the holiday with a period of peace. The comedy series Lead Balloon centers on the misfortunes of Rick Spleen, a cynical, world-weary comedian who takes on corporate jobs to pay the bills. In Giraffe, the first episode of season 2, Rick appears as a Celebrity Oracle on a TV quiz show.

Death in Paradise at 8:00 pm
It’s back! The light-hearted detective series centers on British cop Richard Poole, who is transferred from London to the island of Sainte-Marie in the Caribbean. Poole’s hatred of sun, sand and sea, make him a complete fish out of water in his new home. With a new mind-bending mystery to solve every episode, Death in Paradise intrigues all the way through the closing credits. In the series opener, inspector Richard Poole is sent to Sainte-Marie to investigate the murder of a British policeman.

This warm and funny comedy series focuses on three generations of a family who host customers at their seafront café. After losing her boyfriend and her job, Sarah moves back home from London to help her mother at the café. In this episode, Sarah chases some literary agents while her mom deals with some strange happenings at the café. Watch as Sarah deals with the positives and negatives of returning home to her mother in this hilarious sitcom.

The WETA UK premiere! Masterpiece Classic: The Paradise Part One at 9:00 pm
A clever blend of love story, mystery, and social comedy, this extravagant costume drama explores the lives of the people that work, shop, and trade in and around The Paradise, the first department store in Northern England during the 1870s. The story follows a naïve country girl, Denise Lovett, as she becomes immersed in the power struggles surrounding the store, and a forbidden romance with the store’s elegant and mysterious owner, John Moray.
