This Week on WETA UK: November 3-9

Monday at 10:30pm Masterpiece Mystery! Poirot season 12, the final season,“Dead Man’s Folly”. Mystery writer and old friend Ariadne Oliver asks Poirot to accompany her to a wealthy financier's "murder game" that she fears may turn into the scene of a real murder.

Tuesday from 1pm-7:30pm get your fill of British crime dramas! 1pm MI-5, 2pm New Tricks, 3pm Waking the Dead, 4pm Hustle, 5pm Midsomer Murders, 6:30pm Pie in the Sky.

Wednesday 7pm Twenty Twelve begins from the beginning! Filmed in the docu-dramady style of The Office and Best in Show, Twenty Twelve is shows the people behind the scenes paddling hard beneath the water to make the 2012 London Olympics happen.

Thursday at 10pm watch two back-to-back episodes of Scott and Bailey! A thrilling investigative drama exploring the personal and professional lives of two female detectives: Constable Rachel Bailey is 30, down-to-earth, noisy, argumentative and single and Constable Janet Scott, is 40, a diplomat and a thinker, as well as being a wife and mother.

Friday at 9pm Death in Paradise begins again from episode 1. Catch three episodes back-to-back all night! A warm, light-hearted detective series which takes place against a stunning Caribbean island backdrop. Sent to the tiny island of Saint-Marie to solve a mysterious murder, quintessentially British cop Richard Poole is a total fish out of water. His new partner, DS Camille Bordey is instinctive, feisty and brilliant, and the rest of the team certainly have their own unique way of doing things.

Saturday at 11am Red Dwarf begins season 4 with the episode “Camille”. Kryten, Red Dwarf's on-board mechanoid, rescues a female droid – Camille – from a crashed vessel. She's a 4000 series just like him, only a GTi model with realistic toes and a slide-back sunroof head. Kryten finds himself falling in advanced mutual compatibility on the basis of a primary ident (what humans call "love at first sight"), only to find that true advanced mutual compatibility never runs in a non-glitch, bug-free way.

Sunday at 10am Monarch of the Glen begins from season 1! Archie MacDonald is called to his ailing father’s bedside at a lochside mansion in the Scottish Highlands. For tax reasons, they have turned over ownership of the rundown Glenbogle estate to Archie. Molly has also rigged things so that escape back to his London bistro is not on the menu just now. Archie must stay to solve two crises: a crooked estate manager, and the rustling of valuable osprey eggs.

This Week on WETA UK: October 6-12

Monday at 10:30pm tune in for special episode Born to Royalty! This documentary profiles Prince George, the son of Prince William of England and Kate Middleton, and explores what the royal child's life might be like.

Tuesday at 10:30pm Vicious makes its WETA UK premiere! This British sitcom features a graying gay couple (Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi) with a witty and sharp relationship. The series opens with the pair hosting a wake for a dear friend.

Wednesday at 8pm Inspector Morse begins from season 1 with “The Dead of Jericho”. Morse has hopes of a blossoming romance with piano teacher Anne but his hopes are shattered when she is found murdered.

Thursday at 7:30pm My Family begins season 4! Ben Harper is a moderately successful family man and dentist. He's undergoing a mid-life crisis and trying to cope with the bizarre reality of raising teenage children. Along with his wife Susan and their three children Nick, Janey, and Michael, the Harper family makes for a hilarious British comedy.

Friday at 8pm Rosemary and Thyme begins from season 1! In the episode "And No Birds Sing"
Rosemary Boxer and Laura Thyme discover they share more than a love of gardening when a suspicious fatal car accident brings them together at the house of wealthy businessman Daniel Kellaway.

Saturday at 3:26pm Midsomer Murders starts with season 8 “Things That Go Bump in the Night”. Fletcher's Cross undertaker Patrick Pennyman is found dead in his own chapel of rest with a shocked look on his face. Barnaby and Scott try to uncover the mysteries of the church as well as trying to unmask the brutal killer.

Sunday at 11pm watch Doctor Who “Love and Monsters”. An ordinary man called Elton becomes obsessed with the Doctor and Rose and their mysterious blue box. But when Elton’s investigations bring him to the attention of the enigmatic, cold, and powerful Victor Kennedy, his harmless hobby suddenly plunges him into a living nightmare.

Monday at 8pm season 2 of Pie in the Sky begins! Henry Crabbe has reached the end of his tether as a plain clothes Detective Inspector. After years of toiling in the force, he is about to take early retirement. With a passion for food and a talent for cooking, he is ready to fulfill his own personal dream - to buy his very own restaurant, Pie In The Sky. However nothing is ever that simple. On the eve of his retirement, he is suspended from duty. His boss, assistant Chief Constable, now has him exactly where he wants him and is not going to allow him to join his idyll in peace - Crabbe is free to indulge in his restaurant but always on call when cases need solving.

Tuesday at 8pm Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries takes on “Death at Victoria Dock”. It’s the 1920s in Melbourne, Australia and the Honorable Phryne Fisher is a glamorous “lady detective” goes about her work with a pistol close at hand—and, more often than not, a male admirer even closer. To the dismay of Detective Inspector Jack Robinson, Phryne’s investigations take her through back alleys, jazz clubs, and shady neighborhoods. Beneath her devil-may-care attitude, Phryne hides ghosts from the past that continue to haunt her. In this episode, Phryne investigates the murder of a young man with a blue tattoo who died in her arms.

Wednesday at 7:30pm season 7 of My Family begins! A dentist discovers that dealing with his clan is like pulling teeth in this biting British sitcom. Ben Harper and his acerbic wife Susan trade barbs as they struggle to raise their fractious brood. Season 7 opens as Ben is asked to be a sperm donor for a couple he and Susan met on vacation, and the request goes straight to his head. Meanwhile, Kenzo's father shows up in hopes of getting to know his son.

Thursday beginning at 8pm watch four great British comedies. At 8pm catch Moone Boy:  A warm family comedy series about a young boy growing up in a chaotic and creative household in late 1980s Ireland. At 8:30pm Worst Week of My Life continues: A British variation of `Meet the Parents' that chronicles the disastrous week prior to a wedding as a bride and groom cope with jitters, tensions and mishaps, ranging from her disapproving parents to his crazed ex. At 9pm Lead Balloon continues: A British comedy series following the misadventures of a cynical, disillusioned stand-up comedian. At 9:30pm Outnumbered closes out the comedy line-up: A British comedy about a couple and their three kids. In this week’s episode, Sue's sister Angela visits with her new husband, an American therapist.

Friday at 10:30pm catch the WETA UK premiere of Frankie. A heroine for the modern age, district nurse Frankie Maddox looks life and death in the eye on a daily basis; her mission is to make a difference. Frankie is an infectious character, she’s electric and quirky, absolutely wonderful at her job and adapts to every situation life and work can throw at her as she tries to live in the fast lane and juggle her work at the same time. This heartwarming and funny series follows Frankie and her eclectic team as they visit their patients at home and takes a look at ordinary lives, which are often in huge domestic crises.

Saturday at 9pm join WETA UK for Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey season 1 episode 1. The bold and beautiful Downton Abbey estate runs smoothly from generations of excellent care, but change is coming. With enticing drama and terrible threat, the future of Downton's dynasty takes shape but is it possible to preserve? Follow the upstairs, downstairs dynamic in this beautiful period drama from PBS.

Sunday at 8pm Hotel Secrets with Richard E. Grant comes to a close with the final episode “French Riviera”. The actor's series exploring the world's most luxurious hotels concludes on the glamorous French Riviera. Beginning at the Hotel de Paris in Monaco, he is shown the art of perfect fine dining before meeting ex-Formula One driver David Coulthard, who explains why he chooses to call Monaco home. Richard then visits the Hotel Byblos in St. Tropez, where Mick Jagger and Bianca De Macias tied the knot in 1971, before paying a visit to Belles Rivers.

This Week on WETA UK: February 24-March 2

This week (and every week) tune into WETA UK for the best of British television. Whether you're a DC area resident, visiting the area from out of town, a British television expert or just a casual watcher, WETA UK has everything any viewer needs to escape to England for a little while.

Monday at 8pm, enjoy the Pie in the Sky episode “Sky Return Match” where Henry has to solve a series of thefts but gets unexpected and suspicious help from a private security firm.

Tuesday at 9pm, catch the last two episodes of the new season of Doc Martin. In episode 7 of  season 6, “Listen to Mother”, Ruth argues with Margaret for her lack of motherly behavior in Martin’s life. A potentially fatal accident puts someone in the hospital and a major announcement makes things even more dramatic. Then in episode 8 of season 6, “Departure”, someone goes on a trip causing much grief for Martin and he decides to confront his mother. The information Martin finds out about Louisa is critical and leads to one of the most exciting season finales in Doc Martin history.

Wednesday at 9pm, watch the Downton Abbey season 4 finale. The Crawleys are in London, where Rose's coming out ball is to be staged at the stately Grantham House. In other events, Cora's mother visits and the family finds itself in the midst of a potential scandal.

Thursday at 11pm, see a new episode of Hebburn. In “Stairway to Hebburn”, Pauline quits her job to sell cupcakes while Vicki accompanies Gervaise to recording studio. Tension between Gervaise and Lindsay comes to a limit exploding as they reveal their true feelings. Sarah gets a surprise that would change her life forever.

Friday at 6:30pm, catch Rumpole of the Bailey “Rumpole and the Course of True Love”. Uncontrollable bed-hopping ruins the chances of Guthrie Featherstone QC MP becoming a judge and Rumpole's client's career as a teacher.

Saturday at 11pm, tune in for the documentary Wild Australasia “Southern Seas” Mermaids and dragons glide through the clear blue water, bizarre fish ‘walk’ along the bottom and on tropical beaches crabs and seagulls have a tug-of-war for food. Even the sea lions here are weird. “Southern Seas” journeys around the dramatic coasts of Australia and New Zealand revealing the unique wildlife in these waters.

Sunday at 10pm, watch the last episode of To Play The King, the sequel to the original House of Cards series. The King drives the need to invest more in housing and social services but the Prime Minister reminds the King to stay out of politics. Party Chairman Tim Stamper is upset that his old friend Urquhart won't promise him a senior Cabinet post if they win the election which begins a vengeful plot. Urquhart must deal with Stamper and Sarah, both of whom have the evidence to ruin him.

This Week on WETA UK: December 30-January 5

This week is a huge one. The new year, 2014, begins and WETA UK unveils lots of new programming. We’re excited to begin new comedies and documentaries this week. Read on to see what’s coming this week, December 30-January 5!

Monday at 10:30pm tune in for the WETA UK premiere of the action comedy Spy. Tim quits his post at his mundane job at a computer store and unexpectedly stumbles into a career with MI5. Then at 11pm, watch British comedy Lead Balloon from the very first episode. Cynical comedian Rick Spleen (Jack Dee) tries to avoid an ugly baby's christening and stars in a public-service announcement about recycling that backfires.

Tuesday at 9pm catch two back-to-back episodes of Doc Martin. The second episode, beginning at 9:46pm, is the first episode in season 2. Martin and Louisa share a disastrous first kiss, Martin gets a new receptionist, and a local fisherman suffers from a list of ailments.

Wednesday at 11:30pm watch the WETA UK premiere of comedy Me & Mrs. Jones. The series follows the increasingly complex life of Mrs. Gemma Jones (Sarah Alexander) as she balances love, affection and motherhood between an ex-husband, one grown-up son, two young daughters and male admirers with a 20-year age gap. In the premiere episode, Gemma's life changes when her son returns from travelling and a friendly parent named Tom asks her out on a date.

Thursday at 9pm get your dose of mystery with back-to-back episodes of Masterpiece Mystery! Miss Marple. The first episode, The Secret of Chimneys, is about a weekend party hosted by Lord Caterham (Edward Fox) and attended by Marple (Julia McKenzie). One of the guests, Austrian count Ludwig Von Stainach (Anthony Higgins), goes missing. In the second episode, beginning at 10:30pm, The Blue Geranium is about the murder of wealthy Mary Pritchard (Sharon Small) in the village of Little Ambrose, where Marple's visiting old friend Rev. Milewater (David Calder), shortly after the unexplained death of a young man.

Friday from 1pm-7:30pm watch the best British action, mystery, adventures in the DC area! 1pm: MI-5, 2pm: New Tricks, 3pm: Waking the Dead, 4pm: Hustle, 5pm: DCI Banks, 6:30pm: Scott & Bailey.

Saturday from 8pm-10pm tune in for the WETA UK premiere of Queen Victoria’s Children, a documentary investigating the claim that Queen Victoria's relationships with her children were complex and tumultuous. Behind closed doors, royal domestic life often seemed like a battlefield and this series uses a wealth of written material and photos left by Victoria, Albert and their children, including letters, diaries, memoirs and journals, to bring the subject and characters to life.

Sunday at 8pm join us for the WETA UK premiere of Tales From the Palaces. Discover mysterious marks from the time of the Salem witch trials, hidden in the roof of Kew Palace, and the tangible remains of 'the madness of King George'. And, admire the extraordinary efforts to recreate a complete Tudor feast and the painstaking, delicate repairs of Princess Diana's dresses. Then at 9pm, open your eyes to the bizarre, ferocious and surprisingly beautiful world of the invertebrates with Life in the Undergrowth! Join David Attenborough on his groundbreaking exploration into a spectacular miniature universe never normally seen, but teeming all around us. If you haven’t had enough documentaries yet, stay on WETA UK for The Dark Charisma of Adolf Hitler: Leading Millions into the Abyss part 1 at 10pm. This three part documentary examines Hitler’s relationship with the people he led during the Second World War, with the help of testimony from people who were there, compelling archive film and dramatic reconstructions.

This Week on WETA UK: November 11-17

Monday at 9:00pm new episodes of Midsomer Murders begin with the episode: The Green Man. Troy receives his promotion to Inspector and is ready to leave the Midsomer team but has to tackle one last case before he leaves. Then on the episode, Bad Tidings, Barnaby's new sergeant DS Dan Scott arrives from London jumping right into the murder case of a woman found stabbed in a field with a red rose in her mouth.

Tuesday at 8:00pm on Rumpole of the Bailey, the Timson's daughter is found wearing a devil's mask in the school playground and she's accused of Satanism. Horace Rumpole must help prove this family friend innocent.

Wednesday at 9:00am tune in for A Very Ormston Christmas, Born and Bred's very festive episode set in the Lancashire Village of Ormston. Thieves disguised as Santa and an Elf put a damper on the holiday spirit as Len and Wilf decide to dress in drag to try and catch them. Deborah endures Arthur’s childish pranks on Tom while trying to look forward at a fresh start in the New Year after losing her baby. Meanwhile Eddie and Jean want to bump their relationship up a level.

Thursday at 7:30pm on the new episode of My Family, problems arise as Ben and Susan begin to sleep in separate rooms due to his excessive snoring. Putting the whole house under pressure, the separation threatens to drive Ben and Susan apart.

Friday at 10:30pm Doc Martin is struggling with fatherhood while learning that Joan has died. He now has to stay a week longer for her funeral during which he finds himself having to treat all the patients that Diana, his nervous replacement, has misdiagnosed.

Saturday at 8:00am catch the new episode of Robin Hood! The Sheriff Nottingham holds an archery competition hoping to flush out Robin. Then at 9:00am on a new Primeval, an eerie fog rolls in on the local office block and carrying with it giant carnivorous worms leaving Cutter and his team to deal with the problem.

Sunday at 8:00pm tune in for the WETA UK special: Secrets of Scotland Yard. In the headquarters of one of the oldest police forces in the world, 33,000 police officers guard one of the largest cities in Europe. Secrets of Scotland Yard breaks down the walls of the most famous police headquarters in the world showing us a centuries worth of dark secrets. From the conviction of first Railway Murderer to the hunt for the notorious Jack the Ripper, Secrets of Scotland Yard filters through archives and sheds light on the earliest days of modern policing.

This Week on WETA UK: November 5 – 10

Tuesday at 9pm tune into WETA UK for back-to-back episodes of Doc Martin! In the first episode, Midwife Crisis, Martin quarrels with the midwife who'll be caring for Louisa. He worries about the medications she is prescribing. Then on the next episode, Do Not Disturb, Aunt Joan attempts to conquer her farm's financial issues by opening a small bed-and-breakfast. Meanwhile, Pauline opens a letter to Martin, containing information about a job in London, while Martin attempts to prove to Edith that his blood phobia is a thing of the past.

Wednesday at 11:30pm watch back-to-back episodes of the British comedy classic, The Benny Hill Show. Enjoy slapstick sketch-comedy as the amusingly outrageous Benny Hill plays multiple characters. The second episode begins at midnight.

Thursday at 10:30pm classic Sherlock Holmes takes on The Last Vampyre part 1 . Holmes and Watson must employ all their powers of detection when they are asked by a village holy man to investigate several unexplained deaths widely believed to be the handiwork of a vampire. If you enjoy The Last Vampyre part 1, don’t miss The Last Vampyre part 2 on Thursday, November 14 at 10:30pm!

Saturday at 9pm The WETA UK Event: The Complete Land Girls continues with the last episode of season 1 and the first episode of season 2. This Week on WETA UK: October 28-November 3

Monday at 8:00pm watch Pie in the Sky as Henry undergoes a management training course after a fantastic review from a rigid food critic sends everything into an uproar. 

Tuesday at 8:00pm start watching Father Brown. The Church of Apollo has come Kembleford and Susie is drawn to their charismatic leader Kalon. Soon, Kalon's wife falls pray to murder and Father Brown must solve the mystery and restore order.

Wednesday at 9:00pm tune in for Masterpiece Mystery! Foyle's War: Killing Time. African American GIs stationed near Bristol find they are fighting against  intolerance and unwelcome behavior from the locals. The young single mother Mandy Dean has trouble finding a home for her and her interracial baby. Soon a brutal murder ensues among the bigotry of the locals and the retuning exboyfriend of Mandy and Foyle must solve it as well as confronting the US army.

Thursday at 8:00pm tune into WETA UK for an encore presentation of Scott and Bailey beginning with season 1 episode 1. A pregnant, teenage Turkish girl covers up a murder as Rachel and Janet begin their relationship of solving murder mysteries. Then at 9:00pm catch the WETA UK season 3 premiere of Vera.

Friday night, spend time with some mysterious ladies. First at 8:00pm catch the new Ladies of Letters. Vera moves to a trailer park and falls in with a very suspicious crowd. Then at 8:30pm Rosemary and Thyme care for an abandoned baby while trying to decipher the death of a well-known artist.  At 9:30pm watch a new Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. Helga Allowby, accused of sending noxious poison pen letters to residents of her village, hires Hetty to prove her innocence in the episode Poison Pen.

Saturday at 8:00pm catch the new episode of Diamond Queen. The Queen wants to modernize the monarchy so Marr is called in to assess what needs to be done. Prince William and Prince Harry talk about their grandmother’s influence on the royal wedding.

Sundays at 9:00pm, the new series Chasing Churchill: In Search of My Grandfather begins. Starting as a Second Lieutenant in the Army, Winston Churchill's life in the public eye was an amazing journey as he rose through the political world to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and lead Britain to victory against the Axis powers. Episode one, Wanted Dead or Alive, starting at Sandhurst Military Academy,  which Churchill left in 1894 in search of adventure, Celia Sandys begins her search on the private life of Winston Churchill.

In the premiere episode of this period drama inspired by the stories of GK Chesterton, join the crime-solving Catholic priest as he attempts to resolve the murder of a local village man who is found dead near the church tower. The case takes an interesting turn when the dead man’s wife confesses to the murder in the premiere episode, “The Hammer of God.”

Wednesday at 8:00pm it’s Mystery Night on WETA UK! Don’t miss “Sins of the Father Part 2,” the conclusion of the thrilling two part episode of Inspector Morse! Join the cranky police investigator as he attempts to solve a case that would drive a man to drink; the murder of a brewery director. At 9:00pm catch three hours of Masterpiece Mystery! Tuesday at 7:30pm marks the start of season 3 of My Family! Janey goes to college and dad Ben is thrilled although Susan doesn’t seem to be so happy to see her go.

Wednesday at 8:00pm solve a mystery with Inspector Morse in "Sins of the Father". The managing director of the old-fashioned Radford Brewery is murdered and Morse learns the family-run business was resisting a takeover attempt. Morse is soon convinced that anyone involved may be hiding something but will this help him solve the case or make it impossible to debunk?
