On the way, the Thinga-ma-jigger breaks down, and they depend on a variety of animals – from African bush elephants to bottlenose dolphins to red crabs – and their remarkable abilities to help them make an amazing journey home.

Arthur’s Perfect Christmas at 8am
Everyone’s favorite aardvark shows children that there are many ways to celebrate the holidays and gives them a new spin on seasonal traditions in his first one-hour primetime special. Christmas at Belmont at 2:00 pm
Feel the joy and cheer of the holiday season as the Nashville Children’s Choir joins the Belmont School of Music faculty and student musicians to sing traditional holiday classics like “The First Noel.” Join Broadway and country music star Laura Bell Bundy as she hosts the touching annual Christmas concert at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir: Jane Seymour and Nathan Gunn at 4:00 pm

In the Christmas special, Worst Christmas of My Life, Howard decides to scuffle with Santa and he and Mel leave a mess at her parents’ home. Outnumbered is a witty British comedy about a couple, the Brockman’s, and their three kids.

Rumpole of the Bailey: Rumpole and the Younger Generation at 10:30 pm
Witty London barrister Horace Rumpole is a middle-aged junior barrister who excels at criminal cases. In Rumpole and the Younger Generation, Horace defends a young member of the Timson clan, a family of mischievous yet moral villains. Meanwhile, his wife Hilda hopes the powers that be will elect Rumpole Head of Chambers after her father retires. When Nick Rumpole visits from school, Horace realizes his own son has acquired some of the Timson family traits.

My Family Christmas Special: Have an Unhappy Christmas at 3:00 pm

Ben gets Susan a vacuum cleaner for Christmas, but when he finds out his gift is unromantic, he buys a necklace instead. Ben is annoyed when he later finds out he could have got the necklace for half price if he had waited a day. Meanwhile, the family decides to get a picture of Ben and Susan on their wedding day put on mugs and other household items as a romantic souvenir, but when there is a mix-up at the factory, a picture of them on their honeymoon night is displayed on the souvenirs instead.

Agatha Christie’s Poirot: The Dream at 10:30 pm
Belgian detective Hercule Poirot tackles a variety of mysteries in this intelligent investigative series. In The Dream, the sleuth investigates the apparent murder of a pie-compay owner who feared someone was manipulating his mind. When the investigation spirals out of control, Poirot finds himself enveloped in a world of false identities and affairs.

Masterpiece Mystery! Miss Marple: The Mirror Crack’d From Side to Side at 9:00 pm

The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side is based on the novel by Agatha Christie and centers on Marina Gregg, a glamorous but fragile Hollywood star. When the entire village falls in love with Gregg, she invites everyone over to her elaborate home for a party. The night goes awry when a guest drops dead after drinking a poisoned daiquiri, leading to a shocking mystery deserving of a Hollywood ending.

Rosemary and Thyme: Sweet Angelica at 8:00 pm

While trying to restore the lawns at an exclusive boarding school that caters to the children of wealthy foreigners, Rosemary and Laura become involved in a hostile murder mystery involving an attractive Polish student named Angelica. When one of Angelica’s male suitors turns up dead, the young girl is among the prime suspects. Rosemary and Laura must attempt to solve the mystery of the dead boy while also dealing with the orderly dead patches of grass on the school lawn.

Hetty Wainthropp Investigates: Serving the Community at 9:00 pm
Join Hetty Wainthropp, a detective in her 60s, as she attempts to fight crime armed with only her pocketbook and remarkable wisdom. In Serving the Community, Hetty investigates a string of muggings of Indian-restaurant owners. When a frustrated Hetty is ready to inform the police of the situation, a mysterious group attacks her and steals her purse. After this horrific robbery, the case becomes personal for Hetty and she decides to solve the mystery herself.

The Café: A Note to Follow at 10:00 pm

This warm and funny comedy series focuses on three generations of a family who host customers from all walks of life at their seafront café. After losing her boyfriend and her job, Sarah moves back home from London to help her mother, Carol, at the café. In A Note to Follow, excitement is in the air as the café regulars prepare for a Sing-Along Sound of Music and a stressed Carol receives some bad news.

Doc Martin centers on Dr. Martin Ellingham, a smart yet socially awkward physician. The story begins when the Doc moves to a new town to replace a deceased doctor, and sets about alienating the entire everyone.

With the Portwenn Players annual dance coming up, Louisa tries to ask Martin as her date. When he turns her down, she naïvely gives her extra ticket to Mark Mylow who immediately misunderstands and thinks they are going on a date. When word of their “date” gets back to Martin, he too misunderstands.
Doc Martin: Of All the Harbors in all the Towns
Martin’s Aunt Joan receives a visit from an old lover, who arrives hoping to rekindle their relationship. Meanwhile, a teenager develops a crush on Martin when he resets her dislocated shoulder.

In Plan of Attack, it is April 1944, the Allies have stepped up their war effort, and it seems the end of the war is in sight. Foyle has resigned as Detective Chief Superintendent, but comes out of retirement after a tragic event. Call the Midwife Holiday Special 2013 at 7:30pm

The commemoration also features Col. Gail "Hal" Halvorsen who dropped candy for German children during the 1948-49 Berlin airlift. Craft in America: Forge
The Peabody Award-winning and the Emmy-nominated series Craft in America explores the work of various artists and the influence of craft making on American culture. The episode Forge highlights metal artists including a silversmith, master sculptor, and an Iraq War veteran who studies at Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, D.C.

Craft in America: Holiday
This Craft in America episode, Holiday, celebrates important cultural and religious customs and encourages viewers to explore their own creativity. Christmas in Norway with the St. Olaf Choir
For over one hundred years, music lovers in Norway have celebrated the holiday season with one of the country’s most honored traditions, the St. Olaf College Christmas Festival. Initially a small musical program designed for a remote college community, the renowned annual commemoration now enjoys a worldwide audience. This year, the St. Olaf College Choir and the Norwegian girl choir, Nidaros Jentekor perform a full assortment of Christmas compositions, familiar carols and hymns from around the world from Trondheim’s historic Nidaros Cathedral. Become a part of a long-running annual tradition as you join the St. Olaf Choir in belting out your favorite holiday tunes. Silent Night
The Minnesota Opera company's world premiere production of Silent Night recounts an extraordinary moment of peace during one of the bloodiest wars in human history. The fascinating true story, which won composer Kevin Puts the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for music, is based on the French film "Joyeaux Noel," which itself is based on the true story of a 1914 Christmas Eve truce during WWI, when Scottish, French and German officers defied orders and observed the holiday with a period of peace. Death in Paradise at 8:00 pm
It’s back! The light-hearted detective series centers on British cop Richard Poole, who is transferred from London to the island of Sainte-Marie in the Caribbean. A clever blend of love story, mystery, and social comedy, this extravagant costume drama explores the lives of the people that work, shop, and trade in and around The Paradise, the first department store in Northern England during the 1870s. The story follows a naïve country girl, Denise Lovett, as she becomes immersed in the power struggles surrounding the store, and a forbidden romance with the store’s elegant and mysterious owner, John Moray. The Paradise embodies the progress and pain of a new age of commerce in England, but can Denise and John have a future together amidst the personal and political conflicts that envelop this era of progress?

Everyone’s favorite aardvark gives kids a new spin on seasonal traditions in his first one-hour primetime special, showing children many ways to celebrate “the holidays.” Plans are underway in Elwood City for the best holidays ever as Arthur, D.W., their family and friends make preparations for perfect gifts, perfect parties and perfect family traditions for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and even “Baxter Day” (Buster and his mom’s special celebration). The only problem is, just like real life, perfection is hard to attain and things start to fall apart.

This Week on WETA UK | WETA UK Schedule December 17 – 23

The holiday season is upon us and WETA UK is celebrating with great British Christmas specials. Not only do we have festive shows this week, but we begin new mystery adventures with our favorite detectives like Inspector Morse and the Waking the Dead team. We also begin Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey the successful PBS period-drama from the very beginning and continue our favorite British comedies including Coupling and Blackadder II. There are lots of exciting programs on WETA UK, so dive on in to our highlights for the week!

 

Monday at 9:00pm tune in for a new adventure with Foyle’s War: Bleak Midwinter part 1. When Grace Phillips dies in what appears to be an industrial accident, Foyle looks into her death for good measure. Grace had always been such a cheerful girl but recently something had been bothering her. Foyle establishes a link between this death and anothers, the latter who just found out her husband was having an affair. Could Grace have been the mistress? Is the adulterer the murderer? Come back next week for part 2 of this dynamic tale!

Wednesday at 8:00pm join in on another investigation as Inspector Morse takes on Ghost in the Machine part 1! Morse investigates the reported theft of erotic paintings belonging to the now missing Sir Julius Hanbury, a local baronet who is one of those standing for election as the new Master of Courtney College, Oxford. Morse finds Sir Julius's dead body and at first it looks like murder, but police pathologist Dr Grayling Russell believes he killed himself. Return next week for part 2 of Ghost in the Machine.

 

 

Thursday at 9:00pm get mysterious with Waking the Dead: Fugue States part 1. In 1990, two 5-year-old twins, Jason and Cindy, disappeared from their home, and even after a nationwide search was launched, they are still no where to be found. Thirteen years later, Jason is found is in a hospital suffering from car accident related injuries. But where's his sister Cindy? Boyd and the team set out to find her with or without Jason’s help.

 

Friday we’re getting in the Christmas spirit with some of our favorite British holiday specials. At 4:30pm kick off the festivities with My Hero season 2 episode 1 Christmas. George tries to get into the spirit of Christmas by creeping into the houses of Janet's parents on Christmas Eve dressed as Santa to leave them all presents. This doesn't go down as well as he had planned, and Christmas dinner is a bit of a miserable affair until George appears with the real Father Christmas who has a special present for everyone! Repeats Saturday at 7:00am, December 28 at 3:30pm.

Friday continue the laughs and holiday merriment at 5:30pm with Good Neighbors: Christmas Special 1977! When Margo sends back the Leadbetters store bought Christmas gift, they are unable to entertain their high society friends. So as a result the Leadbetters go to share the holiday with their neighbors, the Goods. Who knows what antics this will bring about! Repeats Saturday at 6:00am, December 26 at 9:00am and December 28 at 2:00pm.

When a group of friends begin thinking about love, the results are a wild mix of one-night stands and two-timing and partner-swapping. Often compared to the American television sensation Friends, this British sitcom isn’t one to miss so tune in Friday for season 1 episode 1.

Holiday TV Shows All Month Long | December Holiday Programming

The National Christmas Tree Lighting

Tickets to this event are sparse but no need to fret because WETA Presents The National Christmas Tree Lighting December 7!  Celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, well-known entertainers and the United States Military Band will perform and the President will deliver a holiday message of peace to all. Watch the statuesque National Christmas Tree, along with 56 smaller trees (representing the 50 states, five territories, and the District of Columbia) as they are magically lit and illuminate the White House.
