This Week on WETA UK: February 24-March 2

This week (and every week) tune into WETA UK for the best of British television. Whether you're a DC area resident, visiting the area from out of town, a British television expert or just a casual watcher, WETA UK has everything any viewer needs to escape to England for a little while.

Monday at 8pm, enjoy the Pie in the Sky episode “Sky Return Match” where Henry has to solve a series of thefts but gets unexpected and suspicious help from a private security firm.

Tuesday at 9pm, catch the last two episodes of the new season of Doc Martin. In episode 7 of  season 6, “Listen to Mother”, Ruth argues with Margaret for her lack of motherly behavior in Martin’s life. A potentially fatal accident puts someone in the hospital and a major announcement makes things even more dramatic. Then in episode 8 of season 6, “Departure”, someone goes on a trip causing much grief for Martin and he decides to confront his mother. The information Martin finds out about Louisa is critical and leads to one of the most exciting season finales in Doc Martin history.

Wednesday at 9pm, watch the Downton Abbey season 4 finale. The Crawleys are in London, where Rose's coming out ball is to be staged at the stately Grantham House. In other events, Cora's mother visits and the family finds itself in the midst of a potential scandal.

Thursday at 11pm, see a new episode of Hebburn. In “Stairway to Hebburn”, Pauline quits her job to sell cupcakes while Vicki accompanies Gervaise to recording studio. Tension between Gervaise and Lindsay comes to a limit exploding as they reveal their true feelings. Sarah gets a surprise that would change her life forever.

Friday at 6:30pm, catch Rumpole of the Bailey “Rumpole and the Course of True Love”. Uncontrollable bed-hopping ruins the chances of Guthrie Featherstone QC MP becoming a judge and Rumpole's client's career as a teacher.

Saturday at 11pm, tune in for the documentary Wild Australasia “Southern Seas” Mermaids and dragons glide through the clear blue water, bizarre fish ‘walk’ along the bottom and on tropical beaches crabs and seagulls have a tug-of-war for food. Even the sea lions here are weird. “Southern Seas” journeys around the dramatic coasts of Australia and New Zealand revealing the unique wildlife in these waters.

Sunday at 10pm, watch the last episode of To Play The King, the sequel to the original House of Cards series. The King drives the need to invest more in housing and social services but the Prime Minister reminds the King to stay out of politics. Party Chairman Tim Stamper is upset that his old friend Urquhart won't promise him a senior Cabinet post if they win the election which begins a vengeful plot. Urquhart must deal with Stamper and Sarah, both of whom have the evidence to ruin him.

This Week on WETA UK: January 6-12

It might be chilly outside but WETA UK is warm with laughter, drama, and excitement! Tune in this week, January 6-12 for the best British shows at your full disposal 24/7!

Monday at 5pm, watch the British television documentary series Tales From the Palaces as itfollows the conservation teams inside Britain's Historic Royal Palaces. 5pm: In Palaces and the Public, explore Hampton Court's chapel royal and the Tower of London, and meet recruits training to be 16th-century costumed interpreters. 5:30pm: In The Detectives, discover the mysteries behind Henry VIII's astronomical clock, learn how to make a meal from a 16th-century cookbook, and bid at an auction for items with royal connections. Then at 6pm, catch Life in the Undergrowth: Invasion of the Land. Join David Attenborough on his groundbreaking exploration into a spectacular miniature universe never normally seen, but teeming all around us. Open your eyes to the bizarre, ferocious and surprisingly beautiful world of the invertebrates with Life in the Undergrowth!

Tuesday at 8pm, see more Death in Paradise! This light-hearted detective series centers on British cop Richard Poole, who is transferred from London to the island of Sainte-Marie in the Caribbean. Poole’s hatred of sun, sand and sea, make him a complete fish out of water in his new home. With a new mind-bending mystery to solve every episode, Death in Paradise intrigues all the way through the closing credits. In this episode, a routine prisoner escort aboard a ferry takes a turn for the worst when someone stabs the prisoner to death. The catch is, the prisoner was handcuffed to Poole when he was stabbed! This incident leaves the detective humiliated and determined to find the killer.

Wednesday at 9pm, catch Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey season 4 episode 1!
Do not miss the WETA UK season 4premiere of Downton Abbey! One of the most popular costume dramas in Masterpiece history, Downton Abbey follows the story of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants on a Yorkshire country estate during the reign of King George V. During this time of extreme social change in England, the Crawley’s must deal with an excess of family struggles, class issues and romantic dramas. The fourth season will see the family reeling in the aftermath of terrible tragedy. However, new hope comes with new life, in the form of babies George and Sybbie. Watch your beloved characters take tentative steps into the Roaring Twenties. You do not want to miss this historic event! If you miss the premiere tonight, or simply can’t get enough of the Crawley family drama, you are in luck! Thursday at 9pm, tune in for the WETA UK premiere of the original House of Cards! This political thriller centers on Francis Urquhart, the chief whip of the Conservative party. When Margaret Thatcher resigns as leader, Urquhart manipulates things and people to achieve his ambitions in the Houses of Parliament, all the while keeping his hand carefully hidden behind the scenes. But Mattie Storin, a young reporter, may be getting too close to him. If you miss the House of Cards WETA UK premiere, or just want to watch it again, catch another airing of this episode on Saturday, January 11 at 10pm! Then Thursday at 10pm, stay tuned in for the premiere of Frankie! Frankie centers on Frankie Maddox, a Welsh district nurse more emotionally involved with her job than her personal life. In this episode, Frankie is concerned that sixty-year old Jean Winters is running herself ragged, caring for a terminally ill husband and crossing town to look in on her father who has Alzheimer’s. When Frankie attempts to help Jean, the situation becomes more complicated than she ever could have imagined, and the nurse becomes the victim.

Friday at 5am, and every Friday morning, wake up with All Creatures Great and Small!
This favorite series details the trials and misadventures of the staff of a country veterinary office in 1940s Yorkshire. In this episode, members of the veterinary office staff enjoy a wonderful lunch at a swank French restaurant, but their nice, hot lunch heats up even more when one of the male staff members becomes desperate to court a female he meets at the restaurant.

Sunday at midnight, continue the fan favorite, Red Dwarf on WETA UK! Red Dwarf focuses on the adventures of Astronaut David Lister, the last human being alive, and his friends. Lister, a hologram of his dead bunkmate Arnold, and a creature that was once a cat are survivors of a disaster in deep space that wipes out the crew of the mining ship Red Dwarf.

Season 3 continues testing tradition, weathering wars, budding romances, and shocking betrayals.  As the Great War continues, horrific battles are not only fought on the war front but also in the great cities and towns.  Distinguished homes have been destroyed financially and psychologically, and while some in Downton fight at all costs to maintain home, Downton may not be excluded from destruction.  Life becomes even more unsteady as the town morphs and grapples to find its place in this changing era.

She can no longer afford to maintain the family's hold on the estate so she reluctantly sees it auctioned to Richard De Vere, a millionaire bachelor of Czechoslovakian extraction who runs a multinational grocery business. With his mother he wastes no time in moving into the Manor. Audrey is annoyed at her new position on the estate, and she is forced to move, with butler, to the Manor lodge. DeVere represents everything Audrey regards as bad taste. Their differences of background, breeding and behavior are at once infuriating and endearing. Tuesday at 8:00pm begin watching the period drama Call the Midwife! This moving and intimate tale of midwifery and family life in East London during the 1950s shares the work and lives of young nurse Jenny Lee and an Order of Nuns. The phenomenal people Jenny meets prove that their warmth, resilience and determination are at the heart of this world. However, with between 80 and 100 babies being born each month, their primary work is to help bring safe childbirth to women in the area and to look after their countless newborns. Start watching this series from the very first episode and continue season one with a new episode every Tuesday at 8:00pm.

 

Wednesday begin a new season of Good Neighbors at 9:00am. Season 4 of Good Neighbors, also known as The Good Life, starts as the Goods leave for a much-needed holiday in Mayfair and the Leadbetters take over their house and garden. But Tom and Barbara can't help thinking of all the things that might go wrong. Watch season 4 episode 1 again this Friday at 2:00pm. Wednesday at 8:00pm Inspector Morse is on to a new case, Dead on Time. A respected, dying Oxford don, husband of Morse's former fiancée, apparently shoots himself, but his doctor asserts that he was not capable of firing a gun. Can Morse figure this one out without his personal life interfearing? Watch part one this week and return next Wednesday for part 2.

 

Thursday afternoon at 2:00pm, tune in for the encore presentation of season 1, All Creatures Great and Small. In 1937, a young, newly-qualified surgeon arrives in the village of Darrowby to take up his first job in the established veterinary practice of Sigfried and Tristan Farnon. However, in rural Yorkshire with few medicines available, the treatment of sick animals still seems to be rooted in the Dark Ages. Along with the residents’ inherent suspicion of strangers, young vet James Herriot faces problems in the early years of his career. Thursday at 8:00pm take a journey into the lives of animals with David Attenborough’s Life of Mammals: Food for Thought. In this conclusion of his documentary series, learn of the similarities and differences between humans and other mammals through the things we eat. Encounter chimps hunting for meat like humans, visit an ancient mud city in Mali, and consider the size and capacity of both ape and human brains.

Friday afternoon watch the launch of season 6 My Hero at 3:30pm. Thermoman, alias George Sunday is a native of the planet Ultron but resident on Earth. He has become skillful at juggling many jobs: superhero, shop owner, and father, but when he loses his body in a card game, leaving nothing but a tea bag (his soul), it's time for a complete makeover. For his kids, it's as if nothing has changed, but for his wife Janet it's a very different story.

 

Friday at 10:00pm watch the first episode of season 4 Coupling! There's a new guy on the scene, a baby on the way, commitment in the air, and love on the horizon. Saturday at noon catch up with New Tricks as we repeat last week’s season 4 episode 1! They may have handed in their badges years ago, but Lane, Standing, and Halford are back, still working at the London Metropolitan Police. In season 4, the team heads to the big top to investigate the murder of a circus owner and ringmaster. They also look into the case of a rich old lady who loved her cats more than her relatives, leaving the cats all her money in her will. Be sure to tune into these strange cases this weekend!

 

Saturday continue the drama with Prime Suspect season 6 episode 1 at 7:00pm. The Last Witness finds Tennison, high-ranking Detective Superintendent at the London Metropolitan Police, overseeing dozens of murder investigations. She can't resist taking a hands-on role investigating the brutal torture and murder of a young Bosnian refugee. When her prime suspect turns out to be a "minor" war criminal given a new life in the UK after identifying higher profile war criminals, Tennison's quest for justice becomes increasingly complicated and as the case threatens to bring an early end to her career, Tennison faces the stark realization that she has little else left in her life, and everything to fight for.

Tuesday take a journey into a historic British estate filled with one man’s treasures from his many adventures on Country House Revealed: Clandeboye House at 8:00pm. Clandeboye House and estate is incredible and surprisingly little has changed since owner Lord Dufferin died in 1902. The house is overflowing with relics from the empire and Dufferin's aristocratic ventures - stuffed baby bears, Egyptian monuments, tiger skins and weaponry from India, Canada and Burma to mention just a few.
