This Week on WETA UK: March 17-23

Monday at 9pm Midsomer Murders takes on the mystery “Painted in Blood”. When Joyce Barnaby finds a dead woman while painting watercolors of Midsomer Florey, she unwittingly uncovers a nest of plots and double-dealings.

Tuesday at 10:30pm Chef! season 2 begins with “A River Runs Through It”. The kitchen staff at Le Chateau are overwhelmed and Gareth simply must find another chef as soon as possible. Gustave Laroche, a one time culinary legend, is available but why is he working at a third rate dive?

Wednesday 1pm-5pm watch the best British crime dramas on television all back-to-back! At 1pm, MI-5 (also known as Spooks) begins season 7. MI-5 has just exchanged spies with the Russians and welcome the return of Lucas North after 7 years of imprisonment. At 2pm, New Tricks tackles the “who done it?” in episode “Queen and Country”. UCOS reinvestigate the death of Annabel Tilson, a diplomat in the Foreign Office whose body was discovered in a frozen river on Christmas Day.  At 3pm, Waking the Dead continues season 6 with the conclusion of the mystery “Mask of Sanity”. Boyd and the team establish that it was Jenson who killed Pierce but how and why? At 4pm, join the crew from Hustle for the episode “Ding Dong That's My Song”. When a visit to one of Albert’s old haunts leads the gang to target Dale Ridley, a disgraced game show presenter turned property developer with a fondness for bribery.

Thursday from 8pm-10pm begin new seasons of your favorite contemporary British comedies. At 8pm, season 2 of Spy begins. At 8:30pm, Twenty Twelve takes on “Boycott” part 1 which kicks off season 2. At 9pm, Lead Balloon begins from the very first episode of season 1 “Rubbish”. At 9:30pm, Outnumbered begins season 2 from the beginning.

Friday from 9am-noon watch the best British dramas. At 9am watch Born and Bred from the very first episode of season 1. At 10am, watch Monarch of the Glen begin season 3. At 11am, BallyKissAngel continues with the beginning of season 4.

Saturday at 9pm, tune in for Masterpiece Mystery! Inspector Lewis: Season 3 “Dark Matter”. Oxford professor and amateur stargazer Andrew Crompton cryptically says that on Friday at 3:15, he will have an "excess of joy." Later, Crompton is found dead at the foot of the stairs in the Oxford observatory. The investigation draws Detective Inspector Lewis and Detective Sergeant Hathaway into the ethereal writings of a 17th-century astronomer and a modern-day circle of scientists and musicians, and their unexpected connections to the deceased.

Sunday at 8pm, join Michael Wood for the first part of the four part documentary series Michael Wood’s Story of England. In part one, “Romans to Normans”, the village of Kibworth in Leicestershire is located in the heart of England and is a place that has lived through the Black Death, the Civil War and the Industrial Revolution, and it was even bombed in World War Two. With the help of the local people and using archaeology, landscape, language and DNA, historian Michael Wood uncovers the lost history of the first thousand years of the village, featuring a Roman villa, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, and graphic evidence of life on the eve of the Norman Conquest.

This Week on WETA UK: February 3-9

February on WETA UK starts off strong with excellent new British comedies as well as more of your favorite British dramas. Read on to find out what the WETA UK programmers want to highlight in this week’s schedule, February 3-9, 2014.

Monday from 6-7:30pm, unwind with three back-to-back episodes of Antiques Roadshow BBC! Start the evening off at Gloucester Cathedral where an early Doctor Who (airs on WETA UK Saturdays 10am & Sundays 11pm) script makes a surprise appearance. Then head to Carter’s Steam Fair where alongside the carousels and waltzers are valuable paintings and more. Finish the evening off at Kedleston Hall where a rare mill clock rivals a collection of 70 toasters for unique finds.

Tuesday at 8pm, begin House of Cards: To Play the King episode 1. This sequel to the original House of Cards continues to follow the devilish Francis Urquhart. After managing to become the British prime minister and crush all significant opposition, his survival on the top is threatened by a liberal monarch and a few skeletons in the closet. Then at 9pm, watch the first two episodes of the new season of Doc Martin! In the first two episodes of season 6, Portwenn is buzzing with arrangements for the wedding of the Doc and Louisa. Will they finally tie the knot, or will the villagers have to put the confetti back in the box again? Then, Martin and Louisa host a disastrous dinner party, the new nanny walks out, and Morwenna advertises for a lodger.

Wednesday at 8pm, tune into our primary channel WETA TV26 for the premiere of our newest documentary Arlington National Cemetery where the history, mission, and daily operations of this honored resting place are explored. Then at 10pm, turn back to WETA UK for Masterpiece Mystery! Sherlock "His Last Vow", the final episode in the new Sherlock series.

Thursday from 8pm-10pm, get the giggles from our new contemporary comedy line-up. Starting at 8pm, begin Spy from the beginning. In episode 1 “Codename: Loser” the main character Tim quits his job during a custody battle with his ex-wife. He applies for a job as a civil servant doing data entry, but discovers during the job interview that he has been offered a job as a trainee spy for MI5. Then at 8:30pm, mockumentary Twenty Twelve begins! Follow the trials of the management of the fictional Olympic Deliverance Commission (ODC), the body tasked to organize the Olympic Games. Then at 9pm, watch the first episode of Moone Boy, a warm family comedy series about a young boy growing up in a chaotic and creative household in late 1980s Ireland. Finally, at 9:30pm, catch the favored comedy Outnumbered from the very first episode!

Friday at 9pm, begin Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries from the very beginning! Miss Fisher is a female detective of a unique kind. She’s no stranger to jazz clubs of late 1920s in Melbourne, Australia and fights injustice with her decorative pistol and her sharp wit. Love it? Stay tuned at 10pm for the second episode!

Saturday from 3:20-6:30pm, catch the two very first Midsomer Murders episodes! “The Killings at Badger’s Drift” and “Written in Blood” are sure to engage your brain and maybe even your fear!

Sunday at 7pm, take a trip to Wild South America in this documentary series! Worst Christmas of My Life Part 2 at 6:30 pm

The British comedy Worst Week of My Life follows the bumbling Howard through the disastrous week leading up to his wedding. As he and his bride Mel deal with stress and anxiety, Howard falls into one unfortunate situation after another. In the Christmas special, Worst Christmas of My Life, Howard decides to scuffle with Santa and he and Mel leave a mess at her parents’ home. Will Howard and Mel be able to clean up their mess in time?

Outnumbered Christmas Special at 10:30 pm
Outnumbered is a witty British comedy about a couple, the Brockman’s, and their three kids.
In this Christmas Special, the Brockman’s celebrate Boxing Day; Karen writes New Year's resolutions for the family and Barack Obama; and Pete and Sue host a gathering they hope will be festive. Spend Christmas with the Brockman’s in the Outnumbered Christmas Special!

Rumpole of the Bailey: Rumpole and the Younger Generation at 10:30 pm
Witty London barrister Horace Rumpole is a middle-aged junior barrister who excels at criminal cases. In Rumpole and the Younger Generation, Horace defends a young member of the Timson clan, a family of mischievous yet moral villains. Meanwhile, his wife Hilda hopes the powers that be will elect Rumpole Head of Chambers after her father retires. When Nick Rumpole visits from school, Horace realizes his own son has acquired some of the Timson family traits.

Wednesday December 25
My Family Christmas Special: Have an Unhappy Christmas at 3:00 pm

Ben gets Susan a vacuum cleaner for Christmas, but when he finds out his gift is unromantic, he buys a necklace instead. Ben is annoyed when he later finds out he could have got the necklace for half price if he had waited a day. Meanwhile, the family decides to get a picture of Ben and Susan on their wedding day put on mugs and other household items as a romantic souvenir, but when there is a mix-up at the factory, a picture of them on their honeymoon night is displayed on the souvenirs instead.

Agatha Christie’s Poirot: The Dream at 10:30 pm
Belgian detective Hercule Poirot tackles a variety of mysteries in this intelligent investigative series. In The Dream, the sleuth investigates the apparent murder of a pie-compay owner who feared someone was manipulating his mind. When the investigation spirals out of control, Poirot finds himself enveloped in a world of false identities and affairs.

Masterpiece Mystery! Miss Marple: The Mirror Crack’d From Side to Side at 9:00 pm

The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side is based on the novel by Agatha Christie and centers on Marina Gregg, a glamorous but fragile Hollywood star. When the entire village falls in love with Gregg, she invites everyone over to her elaborate home for a party. The night goes awry when a guest drops dead after drinking a poisoned daiquiri, leading to a shocking mystery deserving of a Hollywood ending.

Rosemary and Thyme: Sweet Angelica at 8:00 pm

While trying to restore the lawns at an exclusive boarding school that caters to the children of wealthy foreigners, Rosemary and Laura become involved in a hostile murder mystery involving an attractive Polish student named Angelica. When one of Angelica’s male suitors turns up dead, the young girl is among the prime suspects. Rosemary and Laura must attempt to solve the mystery of the dead boy while also dealing with the orderly dead patches of grass on the school lawn.

Hetty Wainthropp Investigates: Serving the Community at 9:00 pm
Join Hetty Wainthropp, a detective in her 60s, as she attempts to fight crime armed with only her pocketbook and remarkable wisdom. In Serving the Community, Hetty investigates a string of muggings of Indian-restaurant owners. When a frustrated Hetty is ready to inform the police of the situation, a mysterious group attacks her and steals her purse. After this horrific robbery, the case becomes personal for Hetty and she decides to solve the mystery herself.

Comedies!
The Café: A Note to Follow at 10:00 pm

This warm and funny comedy series focuses on three generations of a family who host customers from all walks of life at their seafront café. After losing her boyfriend and her job, Sarah moves back home from London to help her mother, Carol, at the café. In A Note to Follow, excitement is in the air as the café regulars prepare for a Sing-Along Sound of Music and a stressed Carol receives some bad news.

Back-to-Back Doc Martin at 10:30 pm
Doc Martin centers on Dr. Martin Ellingham, a smart yet socially awkward physician. The story begins when the Doc moves to a new town to replace a deceased doctor, and sets about alienating the entire everyone.
Doc Martin: The Portwenn Effect
With the Portwenn Players annual dance coming up, Louisa tries to ask Martin as her date. When he turns her down, she naïvely gives her extra ticket to Mark Mylow who immediately misunderstands and thinks they are going on a date. When word of their “date” gets back to Martin, he too misunderstands.
Doc Martin: Of All the Harbors in all the Towns
Martin’s Aunt Joan receives a visit from an old lover, who arrives hoping to rekindle their relationship. Meanwhile, a teenager develops a crush on Martin when he resets her dislocated shoulder.

In this crime drama, Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby of the Causton C.I.D. is a terse, down-to-earth detective who faces many ingenious and remarkable murders. These are not repeats of the Thursday night episodes. This is season 5!

 

Call the Midwife

This moving, intimate, funny, and true-to-life series, based on the best-selling memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth, tells colorful stories of midwifery and families in London’s East End in the 1950s. Jenny Lee, a young woman raised in the wealthy English countryside, has chosen to become a nurse and now, as a newly qualified midwife, has gone to work in the poorest area of the city. Attached to an order of nursing nuns at Nonnatus House, Jenny is part of a team of women who minister to expectant mothers, many of whom give birth at home in appalling conditions. The drama follows Jenny as she meets her patients and learns to love the people who live in the East End.
