WETA Movie Night: April 26

This weekend, tune into WETA TV26 & HD for the 1962 Broadway drama Gypsy. Music, dance, family drama, and the drive to make it big are the themes that have made this movie such a hit. Starring Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood, and Karl Malden. Watch a preview of the film below.

Set during the 1920s in the vaudeville era, Rose is an aggressive and domineering woman who desires above all to make her two daughters June and Louise big entertainment stars. Herbie Sommers is an entertainment agent who falls in love with Rose. The two lock-in big circuit bookings for daughter June while the apparently less talented Louise is pushed into the background. Over time, June decides to break away from Rose and Herbie leaving pushy stage mother Rose to work on Louise’s career. Consequently, the trio winds up at a third-rate burlesque house in Wichita. Will Rose step aside and let her daughter rise to the top on her own true talent?
The musical classic Gypsy airs on WETA TV26 & HD Saturday April 26 at 9:30pm and Sunday April 27 at 11am.

WETA Movie Night: Saturday April 12

Independent Lens: Brother’s Hypnotic airs Sunday April 13 at 12:30am

The eight young men who make up the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are all sons of Phil Cohran, a legendary Chicago trumpeter who turned his back on commercial music to pursue astral jazz and a passionately Afrocentric lifestyle. Cohran’s sons make transcendent music that ties currents from jazz and funk to soul and hip-hop. This film follows the octet as far away as Ireland as they tour and work to carve out their own renown around the world.

Independent Lens: The Trials of Muhammad Ali airs Monday April 14 at 10pm
Explore the extraordinary and complex life of  legendary athlete Muhammad Ali outside the boxing ring. Some of Ali's life events in this documentary are joining the Nation of Islam, changing his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali, refusing to serve in the Vietnam War, protesting racial inequality, and delving into global humanitarian work. On Saturday November 23, tune into WETA TV26 and WETA HD and enjoy a night packed full of entertaining movies. The night begins at 9:30pm with the WETA Movie presentation of the Oscar-winning epic, The Last Emperor. At 12:00am, take an inside look at the world of Native American relay-horse races with Independent Lens: Indian Relay. Independent Lens: Troop 1500 at 1:00am
The documentary Troop 1500 examines a unique Girl Scout troop that is part of a program aimed at encouraging incarcerated parents to maintain close relationships with their children. The film explores the struggles of five daughters growing up without their mothers while trying to balance the responsibilities of every day life. Conversely, the film presents the perspective of the mothers, struggling to repair the broken relationships with their daughters while serving lengthy jail sentences in Gatesville, Texas’ Hilltop Prison. The Longoria Affair examines the story of Private Felix Longoria, a Mexican-American World War II solider who died during the war. When his home town funeral parlor in Three Rivers, Texas refused Longoria a burial service because of his Hispanic heritage, his family refused to let injustice go unnoticed. The events that ensued helped launch the Mexican-American civil rights movement in the United States. Take a deeper look into an intriguing part of America’s history in this compelling documentary. Cyber in Securities
This weekend is your last chance to experience the acclaimed exhibit Cyber in Securities at Pepco Edison Place Gallery! Washington Project for the Arts presents Cyber in Securities, an exhibition featuring 12 artists and art teams from across the US, Canada, and Europe whose work explores the issues of tracking and being tracked in a digital age. Through works that simultaneously present themselves physically and as online data, this passionate group of individuals address concerns that new media may be used against them. Both aesthetically pleasing and socially conscious, the interactive exhibit offers downloadable apps as well as interaction with tablets and systems that the artists programmed and built! Cyber in Securities is part of WPA’s Experimental Media 2013, the eighth installment of WPA’s Experimental Media program.

This weekend Films in the Park presents a free screening of Despicable Me, the animated comedy starring the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, and Russell Brand. In the 1980s, Central American dictator Efrain Rios Montt waged a brutal genocide against the Mayan population of Guatemala. Pamela Yates’ 1983 documentary, When the Mountains Tremble, provided a new generation of human rights activists with the information and added motivation to bring this dictator to justice. Granito tells the story of how Yates’s film became the catalyst in a benchmark victory for the Central American justice system in this official selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Then, at 11:30pm, watch the story of a guard who oversees a Mexican cemetery that is home to the graves of the country’s most prominent drug lords. El Velador (The Night Watchman) is the tale of an ordinary man attempting to exist peacefully in the midst of his country’s illegal drug war.
