Friday November 7
8:30pm  WETA Guide to Memorials
Take an inspiring tour of the many military, war, and presidential memorials of Greater Washington. Visit sculptures, statues and buildings located nearby that memorialize individuals, events, and Americans' service to their country.  Includes: African American Civil War Memorial, Air Force Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Civil War Unknowns, D.C. World War I Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, JFK Eternal Flame, Korea, War Veterans Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial, Memorial Bridge, Tomb of the Unknowns, U.S. Marine Corps Memorial, U.S. Navy Memorial, Washington Monument, Women in Military Service Memorial.

9pm    In Performance at the White House Salute to the Troops

President and Mrs. Obama host a PBS music special from the White House, with an all-star tribute to the men and women who serve the United States. Performances by Mary J. Blige, Common, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson, Romeo Santos, and active duty military members U.S. Army Sgt. Christiana R. Ball, U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Matt Smith and Capt. John Ed Auer. There also will be a performance by Daughtry via satellite of their USO concert at Yokota Air Base in Japan, as well as a live-viewing audience of troops from the USO Warrior and Family Center at Fort Belvoir in Virginia.

10pm    Craft in America: Service
Part of the PBS veterans initiative “Stories of Service,” is the story of craft and the military. From the origins of the Army Arts & Crafts Program and the G.I. Bill to contemporary soldiers and veterans, “Service” documents the power of the handmade to inspire, motivate and heal. Eugene Burks, Jr., Pam DeLuco, Judas Recendez, Ehren Tool and Peter Voulkos.

Tuesday November 11
7am-6:30pm  Victory at Sea

An extraordinary 26-part documentary series exploring the naval campaigns and battles of WWII and how America responded to the victories. Victory At Sea utilizes illustrative and dramatic footage of actual combat against the backdrop of an original orchestra score by composer Richard Rodgers and riveting narration. The film puts a lens on naval warfare, especially the momentous attack on Pear Harbor and the many battles and campaigns which comprised WWII.

9pm    Navy SEALs: Their Untold Story
Premiering on Veterans Day, this program recounts the ticking-clock missions of the “Commandoes of the Deep” through firsthand accounts — including that of a D-Day demolition team member — and through never-before-seen footage, home movies and personal mementoes. Admirals, master chiefs, clandestine operators, demolitioneers and snipers reveal how US Navy SEALs morphed into the world's most admired commandoes.

Shalom Sesame: It's Passover, Grover!

On Rechov Sumsum (Sesame Street), Grover is excited to celebrate Passover at his first Seder, or Passover meal. Shoshana, Avigail, Anneliese, and Grover prepare for the Seder but realize they don't have any maror (bitter herbs) for the Seder plate! The gang visits their friends to try and find maror to begin the Seder. Shalom Sesame: It's Passover, Grover! demonstrates the Passover story, holiday preparations, and Hebrew words and phrases related to Passover. In this special Shalom Sesame episode, viewers meet families whose holiday traditions originate in Ethiopia and Morocco, providing a glimpse into the diversity of the Jewish people. Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About Christmas at 7am
Join the Cat, Nick, and Sally on a journey around the world to help a lost reindeer find his way home to Freezeyourknees Snowland in time for Christmas. On the way, the Thinga-ma-jigger breaks down, and they depend on a variety of animals – from African bush elephants to bottlenose dolphins to red crabs – and their remarkable abilities to help them make an amazing journey home.

Arthur’s Perfect Christmas at 8am
Everyone’s favorite aardvark shows children that there are many ways to celebrate the holidays and gives them a new spin on seasonal traditions in his first one-hour primetime special. Plans are underway in Elwood City for the best holiday season ever as Arthur, D.W., their family and friends prepare for the perfect Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and even “Baxter Day” (Buster and his mom’s special celebration). When things don’t go as planned, they all learn valuable holiday lessons about family, friends, and the gift of giving.

Follow the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge as he learns valuable life-changing lessons in A Christmas Carol: The Concert.

Christmas at Luther: Tidings of Comfort and Joy at 1:00 pm
Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, hosts their annual Christmas celebration that features traditional carols and sacred anthems performed by the college's internationally acclaimed musicians. Holiday music, thousands in the audience and glowing candlelight will fill you with the wonder and joy of the holiday season.

Christmas at Belmont at 2:00 pm
Feel the joy and cheer of the holiday season as the Nashville Children’s Choir joins the Belmont School of Music faculty and student musicians to sing traditional holiday classics like “The First Noel.” Join Broadway and country music star Laura Bell Bundy as she hosts the touching annual Christmas concert at Nashville’s Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir: Jane Seymour and Nathan Gunn at 4:00 pm
Emmy and Golden Globe-winning British actress Jane Seymour and Grammy Award-winning Opera singer Nathan Gunn join the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in Salt Lake City for this holiday event. Listen to the season’s most-loved songs at this annual concert, attracting thousands to Temple Square each December. Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle: David Archeleta at 5pm

Worst Christmas of My Life Part 2 at 6:30 pm

The British comedy Worst Week of My Life follows the bumbling Howard through the disastrous week leading up to his wedding. As he and his bride Mel deal with stress and anxiety, Howard falls into one unfortunate situation after another. In the Christmas special, Worst Christmas of My Life, Howard decides to scuffle with Santa and he and Mel leave a mess at her parents’ home. Will Howard and Mel be able to clean up their mess in time?

Outnumbered Christmas Special at 10:30 pm
Outnumbered is a witty British comedy about a couple, the Brockman’s, and their three kids.
In this Christmas Special, the Brockman’s celebrate Boxing Day; Karen writes New Year's resolutions for the family and Barack Obama; and Pete and Sue host a gathering they hope will be festive. Spend Christmas with the Brockman’s in the Outnumbered Christmas Special!

Rumpole of the Bailey: Rumpole and the Younger Generation at 10:30 pm
Witty London barrister Horace Rumpole is a middle-aged junior barrister who excels at criminal cases. In Rumpole and the Younger Generation, Horace defends a young member of the Timson clan, a family of mischievous yet moral villains. Meanwhile, his wife Hilda hopes the powers that be will elect Rumpole Head of Chambers after her father retires. When Nick Rumpole visits from school, Horace realizes his own son has acquired some of the Timson family traits.

My Family Christmas Special: Have an Unhappy Christmas at 3:00 pm

Ben gets Susan a vacuum cleaner for Christmas, but when he finds out his gift is unromantic, he buys a necklace instead. Ben is annoyed when he later finds out he could have got the necklace for half price if he had waited a day. Meanwhile, the family decides to get a picture of Ben and Susan on their wedding day put on mugs and other household items as a romantic souvenir, but when there is a mix-up at the factory, a picture of them on their honeymoon night is displayed on the souvenirs instead.

Agatha Christie’s Poirot: The Dream at 10:30 pm
Belgian detective Hercule Poirot tackles a variety of mysteries in this intelligent investigative series. In The Dream, the sleuth investigates the apparent murder of a pie-compay owner who feared someone was manipulating his mind. When the investigation spirals out of control, Poirot finds himself enveloped in a world of false identities and affairs.

Masterpiece Mystery! Miss Marple: The Mirror Crack’d From Side to Side at 9:00 pm

The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side is based on the novel by Agatha Christie and centers on Marina Gregg, a glamorous but fragile Hollywood star. When the entire village falls in love with Gregg, she invites everyone over to her elaborate home for a party. The night goes awry when a guest drops dead after drinking a poisoned daiquiri, leading to a shocking mystery deserving of a Hollywood ending.

Rosemary and Thyme: Sweet Angelica at 8:00 pm

While trying to restore the lawns at an exclusive boarding school that caters to the children of wealthy foreigners, Rosemary and Laura become involved in a hostile murder mystery involving an attractive Polish student named Angelica. When one of Angelica’s male suitors turns up dead, the young girl is among the prime suspects. Rosemary and Laura must attempt to solve the mystery of the dead boy while also dealing with the orderly dead patches of grass on the school lawn.

Hetty Wainthropp Investigates: Serving the Community at 9:00 pm
Join Hetty Wainthropp, a detective in her 60s, as she attempts to fight crime armed with only her pocketbook and remarkable wisdom. In Serving the Community, Hetty investigates a string of muggings of Indian-restaurant owners. When a frustrated Hetty is ready to inform the police of the situation, a mysterious group attacks her and steals her purse. After this horrific robbery, the case becomes personal for Hetty and she decides to solve the mystery herself.

Comedies!
The Café: A Note to Follow at 10:00 pm

This warm and funny comedy series focuses on three generations of a family who host customers from all walks of life at their seafront café. After losing her boyfriend and her job, Sarah moves back home from London to help her mother, Carol, at the café. In A Note to Follow, excitement is in the air as the café regulars prepare for a Sing-Along Sound of Music and a stressed Carol receives some bad news.

Back-to-Back Doc Martin at 10:30 pm
Doc Martin centers on Dr. Martin Ellingham, a smart yet socially awkward physician. The story begins when the Doc moves to a new town to replace a deceased doctor, and sets about alienating the entire everyone.
Doc Martin: The Portwenn Effect
With the Portwenn Players annual dance coming up, Louisa tries to ask Martin as her date. When he turns her down, she naïvely gives her extra ticket to Mark Mylow who immediately misunderstands and thinks they are going on a date. When word of their “date” gets back to Martin, he too misunderstands.
Doc Martin: Of All the Harbors in all the Towns
Martin’s Aunt Joan receives a visit from an old lover, who arrives hoping to rekindle their relationship. Meanwhile, a teenager develops a crush on Martin when he resets her dislocated shoulder.

In Plan of Attack, it is April 1944, the Allies have stepped up their war effort, and it seems the end of the war is in sight. Foyle has resigned as Detective Chief Superintendent, but comes out of retirement after a tragic event. Call the Midwife Holiday Special 2013 at 7:30pm

The episode Forge highlights metal artists including a silversmith, master sculptor, and an Iraq War veteran who studies at Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, D.C.

Christmas in Norway with the St. Olaf Choir
For over one hundred years, music lovers in Norway have celebrated the holiday season with one of the country’s most honored traditions, the St. Olaf College Christmas Festival. Initially a small musical program designed for a remote college community, the renowned annual commemoration now enjoys a worldwide audience. This year, the St. Olaf College Choir and the Norwegian girl choir, Nidaros Jentekor perform a full assortment of Christmas compositions, familiar carols and hymns from around the world from Trondheim’s historic Nidaros Cathedral. Become a part of a long-running annual tradition as you join the St. Olaf Choir in belting out your favorite holiday tunes. Silent Night
The Minnesota Opera company's world premiere production of Silent Night recounts an extraordinary moment of peace during one of the bloodiest wars in human history. The fascinating true story, which won composer Kevin Puts the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for music, is based on the French film "Joyeaux Noel," which itself is based on the true story of a 1914 Christmas Eve truce during WWI, when Scottish, French and German officers defied orders and observed the holiday with a period of peace. Lead Balloon season 2 begins at 6:00 pm
The comedy series Lead Balloon centers on the misfortunes of Rick Spleen, a cynical, world-weary comedian who takes on corporate jobs to pay the bills. In Giraffe, the first episode of season 2, Rick appears as a Celebrity Oracle on a TV quiz show.

Death in Paradise at 8:00 pm
It’s back! The light-hearted detective series centers on British cop Richard Poole, who is transferred from London to the island of Sainte-Marie in the Caribbean. Poole’s hatred of sun, sand and sea, make him a complete fish out of water in his new home. With a new mind-bending mystery to solve every episode, Death in Paradise intrigues all the way through the closing credits. In the series opener, inspector Richard Poole is sent to Sainte-Marie to investigate the murder of a British policeman.

The WETA UK premiere! Masterpiece Classic: The Paradise Part One at 9:00 pm
A clever blend of love story, mystery, and social comedy, this extravagant costume drama explores the lives of the people that work, shop, and trade in and around The Paradise, the first department store in Northern England during the 1870s. The story follows a naïve country girl, Denise Lovett, as she becomes immersed in the power struggles surrounding the store, and a forbidden romance with the store’s elegant and mysterious owner, John Moray. The Paradise embodies the progress and pain of a new age of commerce in England, but can Denise and John have a future together amidst the personal and political conflicts that envelop this era of progress?

Happy holidays to all our WETA UK viewers! Here’s what’s happening in DC, MD, and VA this week on WETA UK’s schedule. There will be more British Christmas specials and new seasons to get ready for the New Year. Read on for our highlights in this week’s line-up!

 

Monday at 4:00pm Doctor Who is in the Christmas spirit! In Voyage of the Damned, it’s modern day Christmas Eve and high above the Earth, a spaceship is transporting voyagers from the planet Sto to experience the festive period on the planet below. The spaceship is themed in the style of the White Star Liner, RMS Titanic, and much of the ship’s décor resembles the famous ship. The Doctor joins the passengers on board and befriends a waitress, Astrid Peth. After a visit to London via the ship’s transmit system, the Doctor and Astrid return to the spacecraft just before it is hit by a meteor, causing severe damage and fatalities. The Doctor, Astrid and a band of survivors must travel across the ship to the Bridge to prevent the Titanic from crashing into the Earth. Meanwhile, the Heavenly Host (the on-board tourist information robots) are malfunctioning and killing the remaining survivors. Who will survive the voyage?

Wednesday at 9:30am dig into Christmas leftovers and Outnumbered season 3! In this first episode of season 3, Pete's Mother Sandra treats the family to sightseeing in London. Jake is not very happy, especially since he forgot to charge his phone and isn’ able to send text messages. Sandra tries to give Sue £3,000, to "help" with the children's education and explains how her marriage is "dead".

Wednesday at 3:00pm watch two back-to-back Doctor Who Christmas specials! The first episode, The Next Doctor is set Christmas Eve in 1851 and Cybermen stalk the snow of Victorian London. When the Doctor arrives and starts to investigate a spate of mysterious deaths, he’s surprised to meet another Doctor, with his own sonic screw driver and cockney assistant. How could this be possible? Could this Doctor be a future regeneration? But if so where are his memories? The two must combine forces to defeat the ruthless Miss Hartigan, who is the Cybermen’s human ally. But are two Doctors enough to stop the rise of the CyberKing?

Wednesday at 4:00pm watch Doctor Who, Planet of the Dead. The mysterious Lady Christina de Souza joins the Doctor on a bus-trip which takes a very unexpected detour into danger. Then Malcolm’s life becomes connected to the Doctor’s under extraordinary circumstances… When a London bus travels through a worm-hole to an alien world, the Doctor must join forces with the extraordinary Lady Christina to help the unfortunate passengers, and themselves, get back home.  But the mysterious planet holds terrifying secrets, hidden in the sand. And time is running out, as the deadly swarm gets closer…

 

Thursday at 8:00pm begin Rosemary & Thyme season 2! In season 2, horticultural lecturer Rosemary Boxer and former policewoman Laura Thyme venture further afield, with gardening commissions and restoration projects in the French Riviera and Italy's Ligurian coast, as well as in rural and urban England. The unobtrusive presence of the two gardeners at work gives them access to secrets other detectives might miss — and that murderers would rather not reveal. Thursday at 10:00pm begin season 4 of New Tricks. Amongst the many cases the team has to deal with in the fourth series, they head to the big top to investigate the murder of a circus owner and ringmaster, and look into the case of a rich old lady who loved her cats more than her relatives, leaving the cats all her money in her will.
