This Week on WETA UK: August 5-11

August is here, summer is going strong, and WETA UK is bringing the best British TV shows right into your home! Kick your feet up and prepare to be entertained by mysteries, drama, and comedy.

Tuesday at 9:00pm watch as Horace Rumpole’s wacky string of cases continues on Rumpole of the Bailey. Rumpole takes on a client who is charged with operating massage parlors that may have some unscrupulous business happening on the side.

Wednesday at 5:00pm the adventures of Robin Hood continue as a new threat emerges in Nottingham! The new tax collector Ruthless Rufus comes to town looking for revenge, and Robin Hood’s gang gets involved. Robin Hood must face off against this new foe, but he’s not the only one that is in danger. 

Thursday at 12:00pm catch a whole hour of Antiques Roadshow with 2 back to back episodes! First travel to Highcliffe Castle in Dorset, and then take a look at Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire. See what unusual rare items are being unveiled in these historic English venues.

Friday at 8:30pm watch gardener detectives Rosemary and Thyme in the series 2 premiere! The duo becomes entangled in a mysterious drowning that they can’t help but investigate, but this case has many more layers than they ever could have imagined.

Saturday at 8:00pm treat yourself to the WETA UK Event: The Complete Downton Abbey as it continues with the 3rd and 4th episodes of series 1! As the hunt continues for Lady Mary’s suitor, tragedy strikes and secrets continue to pile up at Downton Abbey.

Sunday at 10:00pm catch a whole block of your Sci-Fi Favorites, starting with Doctor Who! Find out the fate of the Doctor and learn more about the villainous Weeping Angels. After that, watch two episodes of Red Dwarf and tag along for the zany adventures of the Red Dwarf crew.

Monday at 8:00pm tune in to WETA UK for the first part of a new Foyle’s War mystery, Plan of Attack. It’s April 1944 and when shots are fired outside Hastings police station killing DCS Meredith. Christopher Foyle must put aside his memoirs and return to his old job. This episode is the first of Foyle’s War season 6. Watch the trailer!

Tuesday at 7:30pm start watching May to December with season 3! A balding Scottish solicitor in his mid-50s and an attractive gym-mistress half his age fall in love despite plenty of conflicting advice from family and friends. 

Wednesday at 11:00pm begin Hustle from the very first episode of season 1. Con artist Mickey Stone is fresh out of jail. His marriage is on the rocks, but he has a strong family to fall back on. That family – Albert and Ash, two old-timers and beautiful, street-sharp Stacie – are his partners in crime. Coming together to perform one last con, they hook up with young blood Danny Blue, a rookie with the makings of a master. Thursday at 10:00pm settle in for the first episode of Waking the Dead season 6. The award-winning, edge-of-your-seat spy drama is a white-knuckle ride through the perilous world of deadly terrorists, international cover-ups and treacherous double-agents.

Friday at 8:00pm have you been watching Ladies of Letters? This gentle comedy drama is about two very different widows who forge a friendship through letters, each letter attempting to out-do the other. Watch the trailer!

An Evening with Jerry Lewis: Live From Las Vegas

 

Born in 1926, Jerry Lewis is one of America’s most iconic slapstick comedians. He rose to fame with partner Dean Martin with the Martin and Lewis comedy act, which first appeared on television in 1948. In the 1950s, he embarked on a solo career and starred in films such as The Ladies Man, The Nutty Professor, and It’s Only Money. More recently, Lewis has performed on Broadway and been awarded for his humanitarian acts, always known as being a key member of the comedic community.

An Evening with Jerry Lewis: Live From Las Vegas

This Saturday, comedian Jerry Lewis takes to the stage of the Showroom at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, as he tells stories of his eight-decade career in a tribute to his 87th birthday. The performance will feature narrative and musical acts by Lewis, as well as footage from his career, both classics and never before seen. At the end of the evening, Lewis will take questions from fans in the audience. Join us for this monumental presentation with Jerry Lewis, this Saturday at 6:30pm.

You’re invited! Join the celebration and prepare to laugh the night away as comedian Ellen DeGeneres is honored with the 2012 Mark Twain Prize at the Kennedy Center right here in Washington, DC.  Begun in 1998, The Mark Twain Prize annually recognizes comedians who had had an impact on society in ways comparable to Mark Twain, the 19th century writer. The 90-minute special will pay tribute to her success not only as a comedian, but recognize her myriad of accomplishments as a pioneer in the television and entertainment business, as well as her humanitarian achievements. From taking a stand against bullying, to supporting residents of her hometown- New Orleans- affected by Hurricane Katrina, helping others and standing up for what is right is just as important to DeGeneres as making audiences laugh. Further, DeGeneres has paved the way for others and broke ground after both she and her character on the hit television series Ellen came out as a lesbian.

With big dreams and a lot of talent, DeGeneres began her career as an emcee (not before attempting a very varied assortment of other careers) at a local comedy club in New Orleans. She was soon discovered, and was well on her way to the top. Television shows, comedic appearances, and talk shows would follow (not to mention an array of philanthropic causes).

With her signature dance moves, genuine kindness, and hilarious antics, Ellen has grooved her way into the homes and hearts of the world. In what is sure to be a star-studded evening, fellow comedians, actors, and personalities will show their praise for the woman who has become a comedic and popular culture icon. Presenters include Kristin Chenoweth, Steve Harvey, Sean Hayes, Jimmy Kimmel, John Krasinski, John Leguizamo, Jane Lynch, Jason Mraz, Lily Tomlin and Loudon Wainwright III.
