Independent Lens: Las Marthas airs Saturday at 11:30pm
In the lingering aftermath of the U.S.-Mexican War, the border town of Laredo, Texas created an annual debutante ball unlike any other. Las Marthas follows two Mexican American girls carrying this gilded tradition on their shoulders during a time of economic uncertainty and tension over immigration.

WETA Movie Night: July 26

Slumdog Millionaire (2008) airs Saturday at 9:30pm
This film follows Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, as he’s minutes away from winning 20-million rupees on India's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? The show breaks for the night and police arrest Jamal for cheating. Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up. Stories of their adventures together and those with his lost-love Latika, reveal the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Will the police believe him and let him continue on the show? This film won 8 Academy Awards. Slumdog Millionaire also airs Sunday at 11:30am.


POV: Dance for Me airs Saturday at 11:30pm
Professional ballroom dancing is very big in little Denmark. Since success in this intensely competitive art depends on finding the right partner, aspiring Danish dancers often look beyond their borders to find their matches. In Dance for Me, 15-year-old Russian performer Egor leaves home and family to team up with 14-year-old Mie, one of Denmark's most promising young dancers. Independent Lens: Love Free or Die airs Sunday at 12:30am

Gene Robinson became the first openly gay priest in a committed same-sex relationship to be ordained a bishop in any Christian denomination. Robinson has received threats of violence but with his beloved husband Mark at his side, Robinson continues to calmly make the case that who you love doesn’t determine whether God loves you. Robinson’s story parallels the conversation underway in many American churches about whether gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people are equal to heterosexuals in the eyes of God, and also the debate in legislatures and courthouses across the nation as to whether LGBT people are entitled to equal status under the law.

WETA Movie Night: May 10

This week on WETA TV26 & HD, tune into WETA Movie Night Saturday May 10 for two fantastic films. Beginning with the romantic comedy Woman of the Year (1942) where two New York newspaper columnists hash it out in their respective colums, to real life New York Times reporter Jayson Blair's deceptive reporting is revealed in the documentary A Fragile Trust: Plagiarism, Power, and Jayson Blair.

Woman of the Year (1942) airs Saturday at 9:30pm
New York sportswriter Sam Craig becomes infuriated when foreign correspondent Tess Harding suggests that baseball be canceled for the duration of World War II. Sam and Tess use their newspaper columns to argue the matter until they finally meet in person and after Sam takes Tess to her first baseball game, the two fall in love. Will their wildly different lifestyles mesh well or cause trouble? When Tess is voted "Woman of the Year", will Sam congratulate and support her? This romantic comedy stars Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and won the Oscar for best original screenplay that year.

Independent Lens | A Fragile Trust: Plagiarism, Power, and Jayson Blair airs Saturday at 11:30pm
In 2003, former New York Times reporter Jayson Blair was caught plagiarizing the work of other reporters and supplementing his own reporting with fabricated details in dozens of different stories published in the Times. The ensuing media frenzy left a major blemish on the reputation of the newspaper which just a year earlier won a record seven Pulitzer prizes for its coverage of the September 11 attacks. This documentary includes how the Times dealt with the scandal and features remarks from Blair, former executive editor Howell Raines and reporter Jerry Gray, who acted as Blair's mentor and media reporters Howard Kurtz and Seth Mnookin.

P.O.V. Last Train Home airs on Sunday at 12:30am
Every spring, China’s cities are plunged into chaos as 130 million migrant workers journey to their home villages for the New Year in the world’s largest human migration. WETA Movie Night: April 26

This weekend, tune into WETA TV26 & HD for the 1962 Broadway drama Gypsy. Music, dance, family drama, and the drive to make it big are the themes that have made this movie such a hit. Starring Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood, and Karl Malden. Watch a preview of the film below.

Set during the 1920s in the vaudeville era, Rose is an aggressive and domineering woman who desires above all to make her two daughters June and Louise big entertainment stars. Herbie Sommers is an entertainment agent who falls in love with Rose. The two lock-in big circuit bookings for daughter June while the apparently less talented Louise is pushed into the background. Over time, June decides to break away from Rose and Herbie leaving pushy stage mother Rose to work on Louise’s career. Consequently, the trio winds up at a third-rate burlesque house in Wichita. Will Rose step aside and let her daughter rise to the top on her own true talent?

New Call the Midwife Season 3 | WETA TV26 & HD
