Fans of Inspector Morse prequel series Endeavour, you can all rest easy - ITV has officially renewed the detective drama for a third series!

The detective series will return with four new episodes, and will pick up following the shocking events at the end of Series 2, which concluded with Morse in police custody, framed for a crime he didn’t commit, while his partner DCI Thursday seemed close to death after being shot in the chest.

The third series will once again by written by Lewis creator and Morse scribe Russell Lewis, and will apparently be set in 1967.

“As 'Oxford's finest' encounter friends and foes both old and new, our next quartet of mysteries will take the audience on a psychedelic Summer of Love fairground ride, filled with twists and turns, shrieks and scares. For something wicked this way comes...” Lewis said in a statement.

Of course, while the official press release touts the return of Shaun Evans as Endeavour Morse, in true cliffhanger fashion it doesn’t exactly mention whether Roger Allam will be back as Thursday in the new episodes. Will Thursday survive his injuries? We’ll have to wait until the new season to find out.

Endeavour initially premiered as a one off film drama in 2012, but performed so well that it was expanded into a full series the following year. Season 2 was one of ITV’s most successful returning dramas of 2014 – so while it’s doubtful that many are surprised by the show’s renewal, it’s still nice to have official confirmation!

“I'm really excited to be revisiting the '60's as young Morse,” added Evans. “The audience reaction to Endeavour has been fantastic and this series promises to be the best we've made so far. It'll be well worth the wait!”

There are no details yet about the individual episodes that will comprise Series 3 or when we can expect the new season to transmit, but an airdate of some point in 2015 seems like a good guess.

Are you excited at the prospect of more Endeavour
