Good news Grantchester fans! Not only is popular mystery series returning for a third season next year, ITV has decided to commission a special holiday-themed installment to air in 2016!

The ninety-minute Christmas special will be filmed along with Season 3, which has just started production. Stars James Norton and Robson Green are back as unlikely crime fighting duo, Vicar Sidney Chambers and Police Inspector Geordie Keating. They’ll be joined once again by Tessa Peake-Jones, Morven Christie, Al Weavery, Kacey Ainsworth, and everyone’s favorite black Labrador, Dickens.

The show’s first-ever holiday episode will see pregnant Amanda adjusting to life having left her husband, Guy.  The love between Sidney and Amanda is palpable, but can a vicar in the 1950s really be romantically involved with a married, pregnant woman?  Viewers can expect a festive, snow-filled Christmas episode full of emotion and drama. (So get the Kleenex ready, I assume.)

The Christmas special announcement has also given us a little bit of information (finally!) about what we can expect to see in the six episode third season. When the Season 3 begins in earnest, new Archdeacon Gabriel Atubo reminds Sidney that as clergyman he must put duty above his own needs and lead by example. Given the strength of his feelings for Amanda, is this something that Sidney can do?

Meanwhile,  the heart of the show remains the friendship between Sidney and Geordie.  As they solve crimes in Grantchester, Cambridge and beyond, they each deal with personal crises at home, once again their unique and unlikely friendship is put to the test.

Grantchester’s third season will also be getting a rather splashy guest star: Fifth Doctor Peter Davison. The Doctor Who alum will be playing Geoff Towler, the village solicitor and captain of the cricket team.

Are you excited about all this Grantchester news? Excited for the prospect of a Christmas special? Let’s discuss.

Digital media type by day, she also has a fairly useless degree in British medieval literature, and dearly loves to talk about dream poetry, liminality, and the medieval religious vision.
