Arthur and George

Martin Clunes Doing Five Very Un-'Doc Martin'-like Things

As you probably already know, Martin Clunes will be coming back to PBS next month! Hold on, the broadcast of Doc Martin Series 7 is unfortunately still some time off in the future. But beginning Sunday, September 6, Clunes will be starring as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the three-part mini-series Arthur & George.

And while true Clunatics are well acquainted with the varied roles Martin has embodied over the years, I thought it would be good preparation (and entertaining as well) to look at Mr. Clunes through a decidedly less Dr. Ellingham-ish prism. The following are states of being and actions that would be quite contradictory to the persona of the Port Wenn GP we’ve come to know and love despite his prickly manner.

‘Arthur and George’ to Premiere on Masterpiece This September

The US premiere date has been set for mystery series Arthur and George, a new drama starring Doc Martin’s Martin Clunes as Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The series will air on Masterpiece on PBS stations nationwide beginning Sunday, September 6, at a special time of 8pm.

For the many fans anxiously awaiting new seasons of both Doc Martin and modern-day Holmes drama Sherlock, this announcement should come as good news – of course, it’s not quite the same, but Arthur and George should prove a decent enough way to pass the time for two fanbases who are very accustomed to waiting.

Get Your First Look at Martin Clunes as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

ITV has released the first trailer for its upcoming three part series Arthur and George, a three-part drama based on an intriguing series of events in the life of famed Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Set in 1903, the story focuses on Conan Doyle’s real-life attempts to clear George Edaliji, an Anglo-Indian solicitor who is serving time in Pentonville Prison after being (falsely) accused of a series of attacks on livestock in Staffordshire that have become known as the The Great Wyrley Rippings.

Beloved Doc Martin star Martin Clunes sheds his Britcom snarkiness to play Conan Doyle, joined by The Guilty’s Arsher Ali as Edaliji. Other cast includes Hattie Morahan, Charles Edwards, Art Malik, Emma Fielding and Sandra Voe.

Martin Clunes Drama ‘Arthur & George’ Set for Masterpiece Airing in 2015

Rejoice, Doc Martin fans! We may not have a new season of the uber popular Britcom to look forward to just yet, but you’ll still be able to get your Martin Clunes fix on public television this year. And, if you’re a fan of Sherlock Holmes as well, then this is probably your version of Christmas.

During its bi-annual spin through upcoming programmng known as the Television Critics Association Press Tour, PBS and Masterpiece announced a few new titles coming our way later this year, one of which happens to be the intriguing period mystery series called Arthur and George. Clunes, as it happens, plays the titular Arthur, otherwise known to the masses as Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Martin Clues to Play Sherlock Holmes Creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Worlds colliding! Well, sort of, at least. Doc Martin star Martin Clunes has signed up to play Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in an upcoming drama for British network ITV. Whilst it’s not exactly Clunes scoring a guest spot on popular mystery series Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, it’s close enough for me.

The three-part series, called Arthur and George, will adapt Julian Barnes’ novel of the same name, which is loosely based on an intriguing series of genuine events in the life of Conan Doyle.
