'Doctor Who' Series 8: Let's Discuss the Road So Far

The eighth episode of Doctor Who Series 8 aired this weekend, which puts us well past the halfway point of the new season, and of Peter Capaldi’s first year as the Doctor.

Originally, I’d been planning to do a recap series on this season, but then, as a lot of you know, I broke my foot and that sooo didn’t happen, so instead I thought I’d check in now that we're past the seriesn the comments, please. ' midpoint and see how people are feeling about the new season, the new Doctor, and the many new characters and dynamics we’ve seen on our screens thus far.  As with any season in which the show is faced with big, series-altering changes, there’s a lot to discuss. Particualrly when a season feels as polarizing as this one.

So, here's me attempting to sort through what's been working and not working for me in Series 8 so far. Join in and share what you think below.

The ‘Doctor Who’ Theme Done Classical Music Style is Everything

The instantly recognizable theme music of iconic sci-fi series Doctor Who has been adored by fans for decades and has subsequently been re-mastered and re-imagined in every possible way, up to and including as the Sherlock credits. (Yeah, that really did happen.)

So, therefore, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that this fan-made cello version of the theme exists. In fact, there are probably several similar takes out there in the depths of the internet that I just haven’t found yet. But this one, I feel safe saying, definitely has to be the coolest.

Rumor Has It: Is Jenna Coleman Set to Leave ‘Doctor Who’?

Just as iconic sci-fi series Doctor Who is set to begin a new era with the arrival of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, rumor has it that more change may soon be in store for the megahit show: We might be in for a new companion by the end of the year.

The internet is buzzing with reports that current companion Jenna Coleman has decided to officially exit the TARDIS by the end of the year.

The 'Doctor Who' 50th Anniversary Special Redone in LEGO is Everything

Making LEGO versions of things has become a popular trend in fannish circles over the last few years (spurred on, no doubt, by the financial and critical success of The LEGO Movie, which is basically what it says on the tin). You have a favorite show or movie? Chances are, some uber-creative soul out there has LEGO-ized it for you, whether it’s bits from Sherlock episodes or Star Trek trailers or the Downton Abbey estate or  The Hobbit redone with mini-figures

Now someone has re-done last year’s Doctor Who 50th anniversary block-for-block and it is incredible.

BBC Releases Full 'Doctor Who' Series 8 Trailer

Rejoice, Whovians! The first full trailer for Doctor Who Series 8 has officially arrived and it’s pretty much everything we could have wanted and more.

After a couple of teaser trailers that featured little more than backlit shots of new Doctor Peter Capaldi and creepy voiceovers that sound like they could be from familiar characters, we’ve finally got a real look at footage from the new season. There are old enemies, new threats, a tyrannosaurus rex running past the Houses of Parliament, the Doctor riding a horse and a lot more.  It’s so awesome.

Watch and get excited:

New 'Doctor Who' Teaser Hints a Familiar Face Might Return for Series 8

Seriously, is it August 23, yet?

Another new teaser trailer for the upcoming eighth season of Doctor Who has arrived and while – yet again – it doesn’t feature anything that looks like actual episode footage,  it does raise an intriguing question about the sort of villains we’re likely to see once Series 8 gets underway.

The new clip is called Two Hearts, in reference to the Doctor’s unique biology and follows the pattern set by previous teasers by opening with several shots of the TARDIS on fire and electricity surging through Twelve’s body and illuminating his cardiac system.

So, yeah, not a lot that’s new to go on in this trailer, image wise, but make sure you play attention to the voiceover that’s playing during the footage.

A New Era on 'Doctor Who': The New Season and the New Doctor Arrive August 23

The best news possible for all the Whovians out there is finally here: the BBC and BBC America confirmed that the highly anticipated new season of Doctor Who will officially begin on Saturday, August 23 – on both sides of the pond!

Peter Capaldi will debut in his first full episode as the Twelfth Doctor in the Series 8 premiere, which will be a feature-length adventure called Deep Breath. Jenna Coleman is also back as the Doctor’s companion Clara Oswin Oswald.

If this news weren’t enough to send your emotions into overdrive, a new teaser trailer (again, emphasis on the teaser) has been released, which actually features Capaldi and Coleman saying stuff! Not a lot of stuff, but when the only thing we’ve heard Twelve say so far is some claptrap about the state of his kidneys, you take what you can get.

‘Doctor Who’s’ Karen Gillan to Star in New ABC Sitcom ‘Selfie’

Fear not, fans of Doctor Who companion Amy Pond – her portrayer Karen Gillan will back on your television screens again this Fall.

Gillan is set to star in a new ABC comedy from Emily Kapnek, creator of the network’s current hit Suburgatory. Called Selfie, the half-hour sitcom is apparently a modern take on My Fair Lady, and tells the story of a self-obsessed twenty-something named Eliza Dooley (ha ha, right?). After suffering a public and humiliating breakup, she becomes the subject of a viral video and suddenly has more social media "followers" than she ever imagined -- but for all the wrong reasons. She then enlists the help of a marketing expert at her company to help repair her tarnished image.

Watch: Arthur Darvill Sings 'Frozen’s’ ‘Let It Go’ with a 'Doctor Who' Twist

Doctor Who star Arthur Darvill may have physically departed the TARDIS more than a year ago, but, much like they say in Hotel California, it seems evident that even though you can check out any time you like, you can never leave.

Darvill, who is currently on-stage in the West End musical Once, appeared on BBC Radio 1 last week to promote his new show. The actor starred in the show on Broadway for about six months last year, and is now reprising his role across the pond.

As part of his recent media tour, Darvill appeared on The Matt Edmondson Show, where he did the standard sort of interview chatter, and even performed some music from Once, before the best bit of the whole thing got underway, which is where the inevitable Who related portion of the day came up. By way of a Frozen parody.
