Building the Titanic for Julian Fellowes’ New Mini-Series

Those of us who  are looking for something to help tide us over until Downton Abbey Series 3 premieres probably already have our DVRs set for the American premiere of Downton creator Julian Fellowes latest project, the four-part miniseries Titanic.

The series is currently airing in the UK on ITV, where it has struggled with “sinking ratings” (ba dum bum) amidst stiff competition from other network offerings and some negative reactions from critics. It’s also basically Downton at Sea, but, personally, I’m okay with that as a general premise and am still excited to give it a try. 

ABC is presenting the full mini-series this weekend to mark the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking – it premieres Saturday, April 14 starting at 8pm, with the conclusion airing Sunday, April 15 at 10pm. Click through for a couple of nifty behind-the-scenes videos which show how they went about creating the show’s costumes and its most important character – the Titanic itself.

If no one objects to me writing a bit extensively about something that’s airing on another network, I might give this at least the partial review treatment next week – I think those of us that enjoyed talking about Downton might find this one fun to dish as well.

    If you’re hoping for a period drama fix during Downton Abbey’s hiatus, you’re probably looking forward to Downton creator Julian Fellowes upcoming Titanic mini-series. It’s pretty much looking a lot like Downton: The "I’m on a Boat!" Edition, so I’m into it on basic principle.

  • Julian Fellowes’ Titanic Gets An American Airdate!

    If you’re really missing Downton Abbey, then you may want to mark your calendar for next month. Downton creator Julian Fellowes’ next project, Titanic, a mini-series that re-tells the story of the sinking of the famous ship, has an official American broadcast date at last.

    The new four-hour drama tells the stories of both real and fictional characters aboard the Titanic. The series will air over two back-to-back weekend nights on ABC – April 14 and 15 – in order to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the disaster.

    The cast includes Linus Roache, Toby Jones, Geraldine Somerville, Timothy West, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Sophie Winkleman, Celia Imrie and many more.

  • Watch the Trailer for Julian Fellowes’ Upcoming Titantic Drama

    Following the UK broadcast of the Downton Abbey Christmas special, ITV ran a new trailer for Downton creator Julian Fellowes’ latest historical drama – the four-part miniseries Titanic.

    Titanic will re-tell the story of the sinking of the famous ship and is set to screen during the Spring of 2012 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the disaster. The cast includes Linus Roache, Toby Jones, Geraldine Somerville, Timothy West, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Sophie Winkleman, Celia Imrie and many more.

    ITV’s press release says that the drama will focus on a variety of different characters, from upper-class guests to steerage passengers and that their stories will all draw together by the series’ conclusion. It sounds a bit like Downton Abbey On A Boat, but if the trailer’s anything to go by, it looks well worth it. (And if it were Downton Abbey on a boat, would that be so bad?)
