ITV has released another new clip from its upcoming period drama Victoria.

The eight episode series stars Doctor Who alum Jenna Coleman as the titular monarch, and it charts her early life, from her ascension to the throne in 1837 to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert.

The newly released scene features the moment that the young Victoria – or Princess Alexandrina Victoria as she was known then – wakes up to learn that her uncle King William IV has died and she is now queen.

It also prominently features one of Victoria’s most loyal first subjects – her super adorable Cavalier King Charles spaniel.

This is actually a fairly accurate recreation of a moment famously recorded by the queen in her journal. Victoria, it turns out, kept quite extensive diaries, many of which have recently been made available online.  The show’s producers have spoken before about using Victoria’s prolific writings to help them create the story for the show.

Victoria begins its UK broadcast on August 28, and will premiere on PBS’ Masterpiece in January, taking over the Sunday night timeslot from beloved period drama behemoth Downton Abbey.  Will Queen Victoria achieve the same lofty heights of success as the Crawley clan? It’s too soon to say, but from what we’ve seen so far, Victoria certainly looks good.

And, you know, she did rule England for over sixty years, so the show should certainly still have many stories to tell. Fingers crossed, at any rate.

Thoughts on this clip and/or Coleman’s performance? Are you looking forward to giving Victoria a try?

Lacy's love of British TV is embarrassingly extensive, but primarily centers around evangelizing all things Doctor Who, and watching as many period dramas as possible.

Digital media type by day, she also has a fairly useless degree in British medieval literature, and dearly loves to talk about dream poetry, liminality, and the medieval religious vision. (Sadly, that opportunity presents itself very infrequently.) York apologist, Ninth Doctor enthusiast, and unabashed Ravenclaw. Say hi on Threads or Blue Sky at @LacyMB.
