The BBC dropped the first trailer for the upcoming fifth season of popular crime drama Luther, and it’s everything we could have wanted it to be and more.

We haven’t seen Idris Elba sporting John Luther’s iconic coat since the abbreviated Season 4 back in 2015, and, suffice it to say, he looks great. More importantly the show looks great: Just as dark and creepy and compelling as ever.

Plus, let’s cut to the chase: The most important thing about this Season 5 trailer is that is gives us approximately .325 seconds of Ruth Wilson as everyone’s favorite psychopath Alice Morgan, and all is right with the world again.

Season 5 will see Luther face off against a new foe, one who seems creepily reminiscent of the Red Dragon from Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter series. (That may not be true at all, but that’s who the figure in the trailer immediately reminded me of, right down to the project art on his back. Yikes.)

This is how the official press release describes Season 5:

A new spate of nightmarish murders brings DCI John Luther (Idris Elba) to once again face the depths of human depravity on the streets of London.

While the monstrous and seemingly indiscriminate killings become ever more audacious and public, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku) are confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption.

As the body count rises, and gangster George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide) applies his own pressure, can Luther catch a killer and save his own neck?

Luther Season 5 will air beginning on New Year’s Day in the U.K. and come to America later in 2019 on BBC America. (We’ll keep an eye out for more news on that front.)

Are you excited for Luther’s return? What do you think of this trailer? Let’s discuss in the comments.
