Period drama Harlots will officially return to streaming service Hulu this summer.
The series, which follows the story of two rivals brothels in Georgian London, is a surprisingly feminist romp, featuring strong, complicated women with rich lives well beyond their work in the sex trade.
Season 3 will premiere on Wednesday, July 10, with new episodes dropping weekly.
The series stars Downton Abbey alum Jessica Brown Findlay, as well as Eloise Smith, Liv Tyler, Lesley Manville, and more. (Samantha Morton also starred in the series first two seasons, but after some…events in the Season 2 finale, her status feels a bit more uncertain heading into the new run of episodes. It feels impossible to imagine this show without her though, so let's assume she's back at some point.)
Season 3 looks to see the younger women of Harlots take center stage, as Charlotte Wells takes over the day-to-day operation of her mother’s brothel. But this new position comes with its own share of dangers and challenges, including the arrival of a new pimp in town named Isaac Pincher, played by Game of Thrones alum Alfie Allen.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pincher is “ an ambitious and unpredictable Seven-Year-War veteran who has returned to London and co-established a tavern, called "Saracen’s Head," that is a front for [his] sex-work business.”
The official synopsis for the upcoming season offers a bit more detail on what we can expect.
Set against the backdrop of 18th century Georgian London, Harlots continues to follow the fortunes of the Wells family. Margaret (Samantha Morton) has been sent to America in chains and Lydia Quigley (Lesley Manville) is vanquished and in Bedlam. It seems that the Wells girls can finally free themselves of their mother’s feud, helped by allies such as Lady Fitz (Liv Tyler). But Charlotte Wells (Jessica Brown-Findlay) soon learns that running a lucrative brothel brings enemies as well as friends, including new pimp in town Isaac Pincher (Alfie Allen). Meanwhile Lydia still finds a way to bite, even in her darkest hour.
There’s even a teaser trailer – though don’t expect it to show or tell you very much. (But wow, can we talk about Lucy Wells' latest look?)
