'Tis the season! The holidays are almost upon us, which means it's nearly time for one of our favorite traditions: The annual Call the Midwife Christmas special.

The special holiday installment will air on Christmas Day in both the U.S. and the U.K., and will send the midwives to the Outer Hebrides of Scotland to respond to a nursing shortage there. The episode will focus on the ladies' attempt to navigate and respond to the needs of the locals they've only just met, sometimes in fairly bleak conditions with little access to water or electricity.

And also...there appear to be quite a few sheep. (Insert your own joke about Scotland here.)

This isn't the first time the women of Nonnatus House have been sent abroad for the holidays, or had them manage a Christmas crisis. The 2016 festive special sent the midwives to South Africa to help serve an understaffed clinic there. (The following year's dramatized the deep freeze of 1962, while the 2018 edition saw the arrival of a group of child refugees from China.)

But, if all those previous have taught us anything, it's that the midwives are more than capable of meeting any challenge, and probably make us cry at the same time.
