'Doctor Who' Will Return With Festive Special 'Revolution of the Daleks'

Doctor Who Season 12 just concluded, with an episode that ostensibly changed a lot of things about the show moving forward - both for its overarcing lore and for the Doctor herself. (It also ended on a cliffhanger, leaving the Doctor stuck in a Judoon prison.) Happily, we won't have to wait that long to see what Doctor Who looks like in the wake of "The Timeless Children" - the series will be back with a special airing during "the festive season"

Entitled "Revolution of the Daleks," the special will see the return of the Doctor's oldest and most-feared enemies, though that's pretty much all we know about the episode's story. One has to assume it will pick up from the end of the season finale, and deal with both the reasons for Thirteen's imprisonment and how the Doctor will (inevitably) get out of this maximum security Judoon prison, as well as what's happening with the companions back on Earth. But Daleks! Back! Yay! (Personally, I"m a big fan of the weird little pepper pots, and am much more interested in them as adversaries for the Doctor than the Cybermen.)

"We can’t leave the Doctor there! On that cliffhanger! Well, we did," showrunner Chris Chibnall said in a statement following the conclusion of Season 12. "But rest assured, the Doctor and her friends will be back for a one-off extended special around Christmas and New Year. (I don’t know when they’re going to put it on yet, otherwise we’d tell you!). There will be Daleks. There will be exterminations. Thrills, laughter, tears. You know. The usual. See you at the end of the year."

It should be noted, that we don't know whether "Revolution of the Daleks" will air this Christmas or debut as a New Year's episode, much the same way that the special "Resolution" did in 2019. (Or, for that matter, the Season 12 premiere earlier this year.) Given the trends of the Chibnall era, it feels as though New Year's Day is most likely, but that's just a guess.

Jodie Whittaker, Mandip Gill, Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole will all return for the special - though apparently there are some rumors that this episode may be the last for several of this iteration of the TARDIS family. Is that true? It's certainly possible. Whittaker is the only cast member who is, thus far, confirmed to return for Season 13. And Cole, for example, has landed a new gig opposite Courtney B. Vance in AMC's upcoming series 61st Street. So, you know, anything is possible. But there's no way we're going to know for sure, right now. (Basically: Have fun speculating for the next ten months, folks.)

What do you think of the Season 12 cliffhanger? What would you like to see in the upcoming holiday special? Let's discuss in the comments.
