Happy Christmas! If you're reading this, you must have just recently watched the latest Call the Midwife holiday special, most likely while enjoying a lovely cuppa with a delicious mince pie or piece of snowman cake. Our friends from Poplar encountered adversity this Christmas season, but kindness and joy outweighed the sorrow.

This holiday season, the Nonnatus Sisters returned to the Mother House to choose a new spiritual leader, care for some newly arrived orphans and help a former resident reunite with her only living family. Meanwhile Trixie came back to Poplar, fashionable as ever and ready to care for her patients better than any hospital. Read on for the rest of the details...

Winter has definitely come to Poplar and this year’s Call the Midwife holiday special dramatizes an actual event in English weather history called the Big Freeze of 1962-63. The Thames froze over and for 62 consecutive days,  snow lay on the ground across the south of the country.

But for our midwives, it's business as usual. While the weather wreaks havoc on the plumbing and local milk supplies, an apparent tragedy transforms into a miracle and a family is released from decades of abuse.

‘Last Tango in Halifax’ Christmas Special Recap: Part Two

Previously on the Last Tango in Halifax Christmas special, Caroline was changing jobs and moving to a new house with her mother, step-dad and youngest son in tow. No one seemed pleased about it. Robbie suffered a potentially fatal injury which convinced Gillian that her deceased ex-husband was haunting their barn. Last but not least, a local am-dram troupe flattered Celia by asking her to step into their production of Blithe Spirit. This snowballed into Celia recruiting Alan to join the cast when another member fell ill at the last minute.

In this second and final holiday episode, we learn more about Caroline’s motivation for taking on a new job at a challenging school. Gillian’s guilt finally gets the better of her and the Halifax Players face yet another set-back, but who will come to the rescue?

Christmas is almost here, and for Call the Midwife fans that means exactly one thing: It’s time for the series’ annual holiday special!

This year’s festive episode takes place in the winter of 1963, during what was popularly dubbed the Big Freeze. This was the coldest winter the nation had seen in 300 years – one which still registers today as one of the coldest on record in the United Kingdom. UK temperatures plunged, bringing the country to a standstill as lakes and rivers froze, and snow fell constantly.
