It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, which means the countdown to new Doctor Who is on!

Of course, this year’s holiday installment is a slightly bigger deal than usual, since the episode will mark Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi’s last outing in the TARDIS and Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the series’ first female Doctor. Though, of course, most of us know that we’ll see Thirteen for all of two minutes. But still. It will be a franchise-defining moment.

It's official: Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi's next season of Doctor Who will be his last.

Capaldi announced his decision to leave the show during a recent interview with BBC Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley. Rumors have swirled for months that Capaldi might be ready to leave the iconic British sci-fi series, but up until this week he'd repeatedly told reporters and/or anyone who asked that he hadn't made his mind up yet. The series' tenth season is slated to begin April 15th, though Capaldi is currently slated to continue on in the role through the 2017 Christmas special.

David Suchet to Appear in ‘Doctor Who’ Season 10

If you watch more than one British television show, then you probably know you’ll be seeing at the stars of one of them make an appearance on the other at some point. That joke about there being only ~12 working actors in all of the United Kingdom exists for a reason – seeing familiar faces pop up on other British properties is basically part of the fun of being a fan.

So, everyone should be pretty excited (but not that surprised) to learn that super popular actor David Suchet has booked a guest role in Doctor Who Season 10. Of course, in the grand tradition of Doctor Who, there are virtually no details available about Suchet’s character, other than the fact that he goes by the name of The Landlord and will appear in an episode written by playwright Mike Bartlettwho also penned the award-winning King Charles III.

Big news for Doctor Who fans - there's a new companion in the TARDIS!

Actress Pearl Mackie will be stepping on board as the Twelfth Doctor's latest companion, replacing Jenna Coleman, who departed the show at the close of Season 9 last year in order to go off and play Queen Victoria.  Mackie will join current Doctor Peter Capaldi for Season 10, playing a new character named "Bill".

The new season of Who is expected to start filming this year, but will not air until 2017.
