Doctor Who Alums

Watch: Trailer for HBO’s ‘The Leftovers’ with Christopher Eccleston

HBO’s new series The Leftovers, which premieres this weekend, features a very familiar British face in its cast that will be of special interest to Doctor Who fans.

The drama is adapted from the 2011 Tom Perrotta novel of the same name, and tells the story of a suburb called Mapleton, after the world has seen 2% of its population disappear in a Rapture-like event. The residents who are left behind – the “leftovers”, if you will – must learn how to survive and cope in the aftermath. Which, if the trailers are anything to go by, predominantly seems to involve joining a bunch of cults and/or existing in a day-to-day state of general creeping dread and emotional upset.

This is fine though, because it looks awesome.

Watch: See the First Trailer For Karen Gillan’s New ABC Comedy ‘Selfie’

As previously mentioned, former Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan will be headed back to our television screens this Fall, as the star of a brand new ABC comedy called Selfie.

Gillan’s new show is ostensibly a My Fair Lady update, and follows the story of a self-obssessed social media star named Eliza Dooley (in case you didn’t get this was a My Fair Lady remake), who realizes that a “like” doesn’t necessarily translate to a friend. She becomes internet famous following the release of a particularly humiliating viral video, and subsequently hires a marketing expert – played by the always awesome John Cho (Sleepy Hollow, Star Trek) to help her repair her tarnished image.

‘Doctor Who’s’ Karen Gillan to Star in New ABC Sitcom ‘Selfie’

Fear not, fans of Doctor Who companion Amy Pond – her portrayer Karen Gillan will back on your television screens again this Fall.

Gillan is set to star in a new ABC comedy from Emily Kapnek, creator of the network’s current hit Suburgatory. Called Selfie, the half-hour sitcom is apparently a modern take on My Fair Lady, and tells the story of a self-obsessed twenty-something named Eliza Dooley (ha ha, right?). After suffering a public and humiliating breakup, she becomes the subject of a viral video and suddenly has more social media "followers" than she ever imagined -- but for all the wrong reasons. She then enlists the help of a marketing expert at her company to help repair her tarnished image.

Check Out ‘Doctor Who’ Star Karen Gillan in the Trailer for Her New Horror Flick ‘Oculus’

Former Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan has certainly kept herself busy since she exited the TARDIS back. And her goal appears to be trying roles in every kind of project. She’s since starred in an indie romantic comedy called Not Another Happy Ending and landed the role of a major sci-fi villain in upcoming Marvel tentpole Guardians of the Galaxy. She’s also playing the lead role in a creepy new horror film called Oculus, which has released its first official trailer.

Gillan, who rose to international fame as sidekick to Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, stars as Kaylie Russell, a young woman who attempts to prove that her brother Tim did not murder their parents by insisting that the real culprit was a malevolent supernatural force that lurks in a particular mirror in their house, which may have also been responsible for the violent deaths of many others over the years.

David Tennant and Billie Piper Set to Return for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special!

You probably don’t need to read this blog post, given the fact that it’s likely you have already seen the massive online celebration or heard my tremendously loud shrieks of joy, but just in case, here we go. It’s officially official – we’ve got our first bit of absolutely true and confirmed news regarding the upcoming Doctor Who 50th anniversary and it couldn’t be more exciting for Whovians everywhere.

The BBC announced over the weekend that Tenth Doctor David Tennant and former companion Billie Piper are both set to join current stars Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman for the celebrations surrounding the show’s fiftieth year on the air. Tennant played the Doctor for three full seasons and several specials, and was last seen on the show in early 2010. Piper was the original companion when Doctor Who returned to televisions for its 2005 reboot and starred alongside both Tennant and Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston for two series. To say I am over the moon with joy about this news is possibly the understatement of the year. (The only thing that could possibly make me happier is an announcement that Eccleston is also returning, but I’m trying not to get my hopes up about that.) More after the jump.

Preview ITV’s Broadchurch Starring Doctor Who’s David Tennant

Get your first look at Broadchurch, the new eight-part mystery series starring Doctor Who alums David Tennant and Arthur Darvill. ITV has released the first trailer for the new drama, which will premiere in early March in the UK.

Written by former Torchwood showrunner Chris Chibnall, Broadchurch ranked fairly high up on my list of Most Anticipated Shows of 2013, mostly because of its absolutely stellar cast. The drama follows the events that unfold in a small town after the murder of a young boy places their peaceful community in the glare of a major media spotlight. Allegedly, the mystery series is at least partly inspired by popular drama The Killing, though let’s hope this particular version will more closely follow the trajectory of the Swedish original rather than the American remake. (Fingers crossed!)

You can watch the first official preview for Broadchurch in full below. It certainly appears to be an exceptionally emotional drama – almost everyone in this clip’s couple of minutes is either crying or in varying degrees of upset at some point. The slow motion action shots and melancholy music, combined with Tennant’s emotional vow to find whoever’s responsible for the child’s murder are all pretty affecting. It really does look quite good. (And scruffy is a good look on Tennant. Just saying. /shallow)
