Doctor Who Series 8

Preview the ‘Doctor Who’ 2014 Christmas Special

Doctor Who Series 8 wrapped up last weekend with a finale that included Cybermen, the return of an old enemy, difficult emotional choices, and the first reference to Gallifrey’s continued existence we’ve heard since the 50th anniversary special last year.

This season – the first for Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor - has proven a bit divisive among Who fans and the finale (entitled “Death in Heaven”) is certainly no less contentious, depending on how you felt about a variety of topics, including Cybermen in general, the identity of Missy, the handling of the Clara and Danny relationship and whether the whole Nethersphere explanation worked for you. (I have a lot of thoughts about this, but you can probably extrapolate most of them based on my previous ramblings on the first half of Series 8. In short, I love Capaldi, but I’ve found this season largely a frustrating one.)

At any rate, no matter how you feel about the conclusion of Series 8, season finales always bring at least one thing all Whovians can get excited over, the trailer for that year’s upcoming Christmas special! And the 2014 version promises us the most Christmassy of all trappings – Santa Claus himself.

'Doctor Who' Series 8: Let's Discuss the Road So Far

The eighth episode of Doctor Who Series 8 aired this weekend, which puts us well past the halfway point of the new season, and of Peter Capaldi’s first year as the Doctor.

Originally, I’d been planning to do a recap series on this season, but then, as a lot of you know, I broke my foot and that sooo didn’t happen, so instead I thought I’d check in now that we're past the seriesmidpoint and see how people are feeling about the new season, the new Doctor, and the many new characters and dynamics we’ve seen on our screens thus far. As with any season in which the show is faced with big, series-altering changes, there’s a lot to discuss. Particualrly when a season feels as polarizing as this one.

So, here's me attempting to sort through what's been working and not working for me in Series 8 so far. Join in and share what you think below.

Rumor Has It: Is Jenna Coleman Set to Leave ‘Doctor Who’?

Just as iconic sci-fi series Doctor Who is set to begin a new era with the arrival of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, rumor has it that more change may soon be in store for the megahit show: We might be in for a new companion by the end of the year.

The internet is buzzing with reports that current companion Jenna Coleman has decided to officially exit the TARDIS by the end of the year.

BBC Releases Full 'Doctor Who' Series 8 Trailer

Rejoice, Whovians! The first full trailer for Doctor Who Series 8 has officially arrived and it’s pretty much everything we could have wanted and more.

After a couple of teaser trailers that featured little more than backlit shots of new Doctor Peter Capaldi and creepy voiceovers that sound like they could be from familiar characters, we’ve finally got a real look at footage from the new season. There are old enemies, new threats, a tyrannosaurus rex running past the Houses of Parliament, the Doctor riding a horse and a lot more. It’s so awesome.

New 'Doctor Who' Teaser Hints a Familiar Face Might Return for Series 8

Seriously, is it August 23, yet?

Another new teaser trailer for the upcoming eighth season of Doctor Who has arrived and while – yet again – it doesn’t feature anything that looks like actual episode footage, it does raise an intriguing question about the sort of villains we’re likely to see once Series 8 gets underway.

The new clip is called Two Hearts, in reference to the Doctor’s unique biology and follows the pattern set by previous teasers by opening with several shots of the TARDIS on fire and electricity surging through Twelve’s body and illuminating his cardiac system.

So, yeah, not a lot that’s new to go on in this trailer, image wise, but make sure you play attention to the voiceover that’s playing during the footage.

A New Era on 'Doctor Who': The New Season and the New Doctor Arrive August 23

The best news possible for all the Whovians out there is finally here: the BBC and BBC America confirmed that the highly anticipated new season of Doctor Who will officially begin on Saturday, August 23 – on both sides of the pond!

Peter Capaldi will debut in his first full episode as the Twelfth Doctor in the Series 8 premiere, which will be a feature-length adventure called Deep Breath. Jenna Coleman is also back as the Doctor’s companion Clara Oswin Oswald.

If this news weren’t enough to send your emotions into overdrive, a new teaser trailer (again, emphasis on the teaser) has been released, which actually features Capaldi and Coleman saying stuff! Not a lot of stuff, but when the only thing we’ve heard Twelve say so far is some claptrap about the state of his kidneys, you take what you can get.

Keeley Hawes to Guest Star on ‘Doctor Who’ in Series 8

With filming underway on Series 8 of Doctor Who, more and more details about Peter Capaldi’s inaugural turn in the TARDIS are starting to emerge. We already know that Samuel Anderson is set to have what looks to be a fairly significant guest role as a colleague (and potential new secondary travelling partner possibly?) of current companion Jenna Coleman.

Now the BBC has announced that Upstairs Downstairs and MI-5 star Keeley Hawes is set for a guest role in the new season. She’ll be playing a character called Ms. Delphox, who is described as “a powerful out of this world character with a dark secret”. She is also interestingly enough, a banker, because obviously that’s what we all think of immediately when it comes to Doctor Who villains.

Another New Face in Peter Capaldi’s TARDIS? Samuel Anderson Joins ‘Doctor Who’

It looks like Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi won’t be the only new face on our television screens when Doctor Who returns for Series 8 later this year.

The BBC has announced that actor Samuel Anderson will be joining the cast as “recurring character” Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill Secondary School and colleague of companion Clara Oswald. Anderson has done quite a bit of British TV, including a stint on popular soap Emmerdale opposite current Who companion Jenna Coleman as well as roles in Gavin & Stacey and The History Boys.

A New 'Doctor Who' Era Has Begun: Your First Official Look at the Twelfth Doctor

A new era of Doctor Who is upon us: The new Doctor has arrived. Filming has officially been under way on Peter Capaldi’s tenure in the TARDIS for a couple of weeks, but initial reports still featured Twelve supporting predecessor Matt Smith’s Eleven get-up.

Fans around the world have been eagerly anticipating the reveal of Capaldi’s official Twelve costume, as the Doctor’s wardrobe tends to say quite about about the state of the character. (For example: Compare Christopher Eccleston’s leather jacket ensemble as Nine with David Tennant’s flashy Ten coat.)

Rejoice - the wait is finally over. The BBC released the first official photo of Twelve’s new look today, and it’s rather fantastic. Though, sadly, it looks like we’ve officially said goodbye to bowties and fezzes for the time being.
