Great Expectations

WATCH: New 'Great Expectations' Trailer Featuring Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes

Director Mike Newell’s feature film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic Great Expectations was originally supposed to be released last year – shortly after the premiere of the BBC series that starred Gillian Anderson – but has languished on the proverbial shelf for the better part of 2013. However, a film with this much talent involved (both in front of and behind the camera) was always going to see the light of day, we just had to wait a while apparently. It’s finally scheduled to hit theaters beginning November 8, and a full trailer has been released.

This particular adaptation – as all Dickens stories tend to be – is exceptionally British-ed up, featuring a ton of recognizable faces, including heavy hitters Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham and Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch. Other Brit stars include War Horse’s Jeremy Irvine, The Borgias’ Holliday Granger, Harry Potter’s Robbie Coltrane, David Walliams, William Ellis, Jason Flemyng and more.

Let’s be real, this movie will be worth the price of admission for the Bonham Carter swanning around in Miss Havisham’s tattered wedding dress scenes alone. This is the sort of role that seems right up her alley.

Watch the trailer – which is both creepy and lovely to look at – for yourself below.

Good But Slightly Less than Great Expectations: Let's Dish Part Two

Masterpiece Classic’s newest adaptation of Charles Dickens Great Expectations concluded this past Sunday night. Much like the drama’s first installment, the conclusion is a bit of a mixed bag – several really fantastic performances from the cast, beautiful imagery, a few interesting departures from the source material, and a story that occasionally felt too heavy on the plot specifics and too light on the emotional payoff.

So click through, and let’s talk about it. If you still need to catch up, you can watch both episodes online right now! (And then come talk about it.)

Watch a Scene From Tonight’s Great Expectations Finale!

Great Expectations concludes on Masterpiece Classic tonight.

While there was a lot to like about Part One, particularly the stellar performances of the bulk of the cast, it was also a dark and difficult episode in a lot of ways as well. It should be very interesting to see how this adaptation handles moving into the part of this story where more of the action is and when so many of the more complicated and ambiguous character moments take place.

Great Expectations, Part One: Episode Dish

Sidebar: I need a new name for our programming discussion style posts that don’t belong to a particular ongoing series. Any suggestions? Eternal gratitude on offer, FYI.

Masterpiece Classic is currently airing the BBC’s latest adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel Great Expectations. This version was created to celebrate to mark the bicentennial of Dickens’ birth – another, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, will be airing in a couple of weeks. While I have never been much of a Dickensian, I do have an automatic interest in anything that has this many great actors in it: Gillian Anderson – whom we already know can do Dickens credibly from her turn in Bleak HousePoirot’s David Suchet, Ray Winstone, Vanessa Kirby from The Hour and newcomer (at least to me) Douglas Booth. There was also quite a bit of press around this adaptaion when BBC One aired it at Christmas, thus I have been looking forward to trying it out for myself.

Click through and let’s dish Part One – so far, my feelings are a bit of a mixed bag, but I’m definitely curious about where we’ll go in Part Two this weekend. Would love to hear others’ thoughts!

The newest adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations premieres tonight at 9pm on Masterpiece Classic! Starring Gillian Anderson, Douglas Booth, David Suchet, Ray Winstone and Vanessa Kirby, it’s a haunting reimagining of a story that many of us know by heart. (And it’s pretty beautiful to look at, too.)

Click through for a sneak peek at a scene from tonight’s premiere! In it, we see Pip’s first trip to Satis house and his fateful first meeting with the decidedly creepy Miss Havisham, who dresses in a bedraggled wedding gown and doesn’t bother with the inconvenience of shoes.

Two New Clips From the BBC’s Great Expectations

The BBC has released two new clips for their new Christmas production of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. This adaptation stars Gillian Anderson, Ray Winstone, David Suchet, Vanessa Kirby and Douglas Booth. (You can see the promo for this special here if you haven’t yet.)

Anderson is the youngest woman to ever play the mad Miss Havisham and it certainly seems as though she’ll be marking her mark on the role in other ways as well. She is really quite creepy and disturbing. (Though somehow she manages to look exceptionally beautiful all done up in the white makeup.)

Click through and take a look for yourself. Great Expectations will be coming to a TV near you in Spring 2012 as part of Masterpiece Classic. We'll keep youp posted on an airdate as that develops.

First Preview for the BBC’s New Great Expectations!

As the centerpiece of their 2011 Christmas schedule, the BBC is presenting a new three-part, star-studded adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic Great Expectations.

The X-Files’ Gillian Anderson – who has already done fantastic work in a Dickens adaptation in Bleak House – stars as Miss Havisham, and is joined by Ray Winstone, Vanessa Kirby, Douglas Booth and Poirot’s David Suchet.

The first official promotional trailer was released last week and it looks wonderfully creepy. (And Anderson certainly looks the part of Miss Havisham, that’s for sure!)

Take a look for yourself via the clip below and let us know what you think. Great Expectations will be coming to Masterpiece and WETA in the Spring of 2012.
