American fans still have a little under a month to go before the third season of Poldark hits our screens in the US, but there’s already good news to share about Season 4!

Yes, really. And, I know, we haven’t seen Season 3 yet. But, the popular period drama was renewed for a fourth season back in April, months before the third even aired in the U.K. (The real lesson here is everyone loves Aidan Turner, I guess!)  And now production on Season 4 officially starts this week!

Several of the accounts associated with the show, including the BBC press office, Masterpiece and the official Poldark account all shared a photo featuring members of the series’ cast and crew, including stars Heida Reed and Jack Farthing. Everyone certainly seems very excited.

An official press release for Season 4 accompanied the new image and offered a few details about what we can expect to see in Season 4.

It’s now 1796, and Ross must defend Cornwall from an empowered George Warleggan, risking everything he holds dear as he embarks on a political journey which takes him to the nation's capital. Elsewhere, Demelza finds her loyalties torn, Elizabeth tries to strengthen her marriage, and….some other things happen. Which I won’t include in this description here because, technically, they include some spoilers for things we haven’t seen here in the U.S. yet. So, perhaps proceed with caution on that front. But know that they sound exciting. (And we’ll get back to it later.)

In happier news, all our favorite regulars will be back for Season 4, along with some of the new faces we’ll meet in Season 3, including Harry Richardson, Tom York, Josh Whitehouse and Ellise Chappell. They’ll also be joined by two new faces – The Thick of It’s Rebecca Front and The Hollow Crown’s Max Bennett.

“We hope this will be our strongest series yet, with eight brilliant scripts from Debbie Horsfield, a whole new world of stories and our very wonderful cast,” said Mammoth Screen executive producer Karen Thrussell. “In this series Ross and Demelza will face new challenges and try to turn their backs on old ghosts. Ross strives to become a better man, but his dark and reckless streak is never far from the surface and will lead to him facing new enemies and suffering great losses."

That certainly sounds…ominous.

A release date for Season 4 is not yet known – on either side of the pond – but will happen at some point in 2018. In the meantime, us Yanks can look forward to the U.S. premiere of Season 3 on PBS Masterpiece on Sunday, October 1.
