The BBC released its first trailer for upcoming, presumably heart-wrenching drama The Cry starring Victoria’s Jenna Coleman.

The four-part series is based on a 2013 novel by Helen FitzGerald, and follows the story of a young couple whose baby is abducted while on a trip to a rural Australian town. Coleman, trading in her recent royal robes for a more contemporary part, will play grieving young mother Johanna. She and her husband Alistair (played by Ewan Leslie) must struggle to keep their family together in the face of unimaginable loss amid intense public scrutiny.

And if the trailer is any indication, they’re not exactly doing the best job of it.

Now, it’s possible that I’m a bit biased from years of watching Coleman on both Doctor Who and Victoria. But even just in this forty-second clip, her performance looks phenomenal.

Earlier this year, the BBC described The Cry as “a journey into the disintegrating psychology of a young woman, exposing the myths and truths of motherhood.” And watching this trailer, I believe it. The show certainly seems darker than I originally suspected.

The BBC indicated that the drama is “coming soon”, but offered no firm airdate for when “soon” might be. The Cry will broadcast in America first via the Sundance Now streaming service before eventually airing on the Sundance network itself, at some even later point. Of course, we have no idea when either of those two events will occur, but hopefully it won’t be too long after the series’ UK debut.

Fingers crossed, anyway.

What do you think of the look of The Cry? Are you excited to see Coleman take on a new challenge as an actress? Let’s discuss in the comments.
